Title: Composers Hall of Fame Game.
Post by: The Emperor on December 28, 2007, 09:06:48 AM
So after all the requests of families around the world, here it is.
Since i'm starting i will set the rules and the composers who will begin the competition.

Rules:

1- One vote a day (a 2+ and 2-).
2- Once a composer reaches 20 points he goes to the hall of fame, and another composer enters the competition.
3. Once a composer is eliminated, goes to Purgatory. and a new composer enters competition.
4. The last person to vote for the elimination or for the hall of fame is the one who enters the new composer.
5. 10 composers in competition in each "round"
6. Once 10 composers are in the purgatory, one round is made to save one soul, the rest go straight to hell!

Here goes the first 10 with 10 points each

Handel 10
Bach 10
Beethoven 10
Mozart 10
Dvorak 10
Tchaikovsky 10
Mahler 10
Stravinsky 10
Bartok 10
Shostakovich 10

Go!

Yes, once a new composer enters the game he starts with 10 points as well, it's the default.

And to make matters worse, my mom has translated some Bartok family papers into Turkish (from English) at the request of (I think) Bela's grandson. The case involved securing a Turkish copyright for a piece whose title escapes me, though I remember it wasn't on ArkivMusic.

Schubie-doo's okay--and well-ensconced in the Austro-Germanic Hall of Fame--but there are easily a couple of dozen others whose works I reach for first, many of whom were also not mentioned (though hardly unmentionable).

I think we better change one rule, to reach the hall of fame should be 20 points, 30 points is a lot for 10 composers a round, there's too many to choose.
So it should go Losers(0) -> Default(10) -> Hall of Fame(20)
It's fine right?

Those can enter later, just vote on those you don't like and eventually you'll have the chance to put yours in the game.

The goal here is to keep rotating, and of course, survival of the fittest!

The goal is not to even things out, its to get composers you like to the hall of fame, and eliminate those you don't like.
If we keep even things out, there's no fun.
I might have to change the rules ;D

I actually am very grateful for him and see him as more important than many other composers on that list. However, when it comes to enjoyment and to who I listen to more often, he doesn't do it for me as much as the others on this list.

I have similar feelings about Stravinsky.  The goal now is to get Stravinsky eliminated and replaced by Schumann.

Handel is doomed!

This is the stupidest most undemocratic poll I've ever seen in all my life. Multiple votes per person and all. And you wonder why I am so cynical about this place? But the fact that the usual suspects of GMG have saw fit to boot out Handel first must by default confirm that Handle is the greatest composer. Cheers lads!

I have already pointed out that people are allowed multiple votes, ie one per day, so that those regulars attending this thread are over represented. By the look of it its the same few voting again day after day. You may call that democratic, but please don't run for President...

good point. The "poopy flying" species are more deadly, they'll drop a log of poop on people that'll kill them instantly while they're walking around in the rain forest.

The "flying poopy" species fly around underwater, and while they also drop their poop, the speed will be much slower, resulting in rare chance of bodily injury.

Perhaps, if the options are there, there may be a poll where users are allowed to vote twice per day but will not see the results until the vote expires. That way the votes given solely to save (or bury) a composer may be avoided. We can see at the end of say 1 month who got the most and least votes. There will have to be 20 choices for 10 composers (1 for + and 1 for -). If this is not possible there may be two polls: one for positive votes and one for negative ones  ::)

That's a shame, but you've had the same voting opportunities as all other members.  So start voting and stop whining.

Nah, just bump the + and - to 2 or 3 instead of 1. I don't mean 2 or three separate votes, but just add or subtract two or three instead of one.

That way, we can speed things up. I recommend that you start at a predetermined time.

I actually thought of that.
Let's all agree in a date where to begin.
2 points at the time seems good.

3rd of January, the new voting begins (2+ , 2-)
Is that fine with everybody?

Yes I admit this game is a nothing. But the concept has potential as entertainment, just it needed a bit more thought at the outset. People are going to get a bit tired of keeping this up in any case, only the Bach cultists will hang on for their inevitable victory.

What's this with +/- 2? I've understood that if you pass one day, you can't vote for two days the following day. If that is allowed I have lots of unused votes, since this thread is quite some days old, and I've only votes three times!!!!

The +/- is just for the game to get quicker and funnier.
There's no such thing as unused votes, if you didn't vote a certain day, you missed your change.

I just realized something.... Once all of the "great" composers are in the Hall of Fame, and their "not-so-great" colleagues are in Hell, we will be left with a pool of mediocre composers.  Thus, mediocre composers could end up in the Hall of Fame while arguably superior "not-so-great" composers were sent to Hell early in the game.    8)

Careful not to fall into that "soccer trophy" mentality.  If the lesser known ones are added then they probably will never get to the 20...and if they do, then maybe we should listen to them more. ;D

I'm not going to change the rules.
I was thinking of like an extra round just for the losers, like a side game for an extra entry on the hall of fame, just for those greats to have their last chance, but if the people doesn't want, won't be done ;)

I thought that place was called purgatory. IOW, when you die, it's either heaven, hell or purgatory.

It's been a while since I read Inferno but I seem to remember a section that was part of Hell, but that came before the first circle and was reserved for ancient philosophers. I should read it again.

EDIT: Wikipedia to the rescue!

First Circle (Limbo). Here reside the unbaptized and the virtuous pagans, who, though not sinful, did not accept Christ. Here also reside those who, if they lived before the coming of Christ, did not pay fitting homage to their respective deity. They are not punished in an active sense, but rather grieve only their separation from God, without hope of reconciliation.

Okay, carry on.  $:)

My idea was for them to have a last chance, but there was already someone here that didn't like the idea....
But i'll probably will do it, one last chance for them, cuz no one had a saying in what composers started the game anyway, so Handel can get his chance this way :P
When we reach 10 composers in the purgatory, we will do a round to get another composer in the hall of fame, the rest straight to hell!

He is, but not here. Any composer who is not Bach, Mozart, Haydn, romantic or part of the postromantic, early modernism has a hard time getting anywhere on this board!

What made you think of Rubinstein?

I liked what I knew about him so far and am interested in learning more.  He was one of the arch-romantics.

He wrote the opera, The Demon whose premier in 1875 was a great success.  This is a quote from the liner notes, "While conservative and accessible in harmonic language, structurally and stylistically The Demon is refreshingly original and it greatly influenced Tchaikovsky's work on Yevgeny Onegin .  There are musical and textual reflections of Glinka, Meyerbeer, Gounod and even Wagner, but Rubinstein integrates all of these into his own form of expression, producing an opera of many beauties."

He was a pianist, one of the great virtuosos of the nineteenth century, considered towards the end of his life the only serious rival to Franz Liszt."

He was also a noted conductor, educator, and composer.  He founded the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1862 and composed several symphonies, piano concertos.  His music, contemptuously disregarded for much of the 20th century, has begun to come back in vogue thanks to the Romantic Revival of recent years.  His piano concertos are heard again, and his "Ocean Symphony" has regained some currency.  Of his 19 operas, The Demon has always been the most admired, and its sonorous aria, "Do not weep, child," was a specialty of the legendary bass Chaliapin."

I was thinking of doing that extra round for the purgatory guys(once we get to 10), one would go to the hall(the winner), the other 9 to hell for eternity.
I think it could be fun, since only one of ten can enter the hall, we all will be fighting hard for our favorite.

No one else does either, Harry.  Were adding two points to one name and taking two points away from another name, once a day.  It's just play and doesn't mean anything.  You can make your choices based on any criteria you choose, including complete randomness.  One a name gets either 20 points or 0, it's out!  Join us and have fun!

From Good Omens, by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett:

"Listen," said [the demon] Crowley, desperately, "how many musicians do you think your side have got, eh? First grade, I mean."

Aziraphale [the angel] looked taken aback. "Well, I should think-" he began.

"Two," said Crowley. "Elgar and Liszt. That's all. We've got the rest. Beethoven, Brahms, all the Bachs, Mozart, the lot. Can you imagine eternity with Elgar?"

Aziraphale shut his eyes. "All too easily," he groaned.

This is getting too absurd to participate in even as a meaningless lark.  Everybody would know that Elgar's Pelleas and Melisande is Handel's best opera, if it were cruelly suppressed by the fascists of taste!

What? Bruckner is already in the Hall. Who put him in the game again?
Didn't someone just add Fauré?

Atterberg is already out in purgatory.

What are you last two thinking? lolz

I'm afraid but those votes won't count. You have to vote again.

This game has gotten silly a long time ago. You will end up with a large amount of great composers in Hell (because of being pitted against Bach and Beethoven), and a lot of mediocrities in The hall of Fame (because they are pitted against nonentities). We're not completely there yet, but we are getting closer day by day.

That's right.  Barber is now in the Hall of Fame - that's far better than the music warrants.

That's right.  Barber is now in the Hall of Fame - that's far better than the music warrants.

A good opera, a beautiful "Gesangszene" (Knoxville), a very nice violin concerto, an interesting piano sonata, some good songs, a fine symphony and some fairly interesting other stuff does not an Entry to The all of Fame make.

You put Faure in the hall of fame and have the chutzpah to kick about Barber?  Hah!  At least you had the decency to nominate Nielsen.  As for this game getting silly:  WTF?  It was silly from the start!

Faure ahead of Barber - that's reasonable.  And, yes, the game has always been silly, but it did possess a degree of symmetry that's gone now.

We got your number long ago, Don.  I don't think your taste is quite as poor as this remark suggests, so you must just be ignorant about his work and prejudiced against it--which, of course, doesn't stop you from making such arrogant remarks on this or any of a number of other subjects on which you are equally ill-informed.

No clue about the history of this thing but I can't let Verdi go without a fight. Adding two points to Verdi. Lifting two points from Petterson.

You must be a Barber fanatic to come up with the foolish statements above, especially the stupid comment that if I don't consider Baber worthy of HOF status, I must be "ignorant about his work and prejudiced against it".  Try making some sense.

Let's get serious here.  Look at the prime names currently in the Hall of Fame - Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Brahms, Mahler, etc.  If you believe that Barber deserves to be in that company, that's fine.  But expect that many others would consider such designation ridiculous.

As for having someone's number, I can't say that I have yours.  In order to do so, I would have to possess some degree of interest in you.

Yes I did. And still find it perfectly reasonable to do so. At least he had some kind of originality as well as importance/significance that I can't see Barber even remotely having. However nice a man he may have been, and however how well kis music may sound. This goes beyond whether one likes their music or not. Read some musical history.

Of the available lot he seemed, along with Honegger, the best bet. But we were already seeing the indications of where it would all end then. And it will get worse.

Yes, let's get serious here:  you're mischaracterizing my comments...but that's nothing new.

Yes, let's get serious here:  this is a GAME.  A pastime that was silly from the start.  Anyone taking it seriously needs his head examined.

And let's really get serious here:  Very few in my opinion rank with Mozart, Bach, and Beethoven--not Mussorgsky, Bartok, Barber, nor Faure, and certainly not the likes of Schnittke, Norgard, nor Rachmaninoff (no matter how much I might like them).  And some of those who've been consigned to hell by other players in this game do not belong there either--once again, in my opinion.

Among the current list of candidates, there is only one who belongs among the ranks of the great: Verdi--but those playing this game have consistently threatened to consign him to the fires of Ghenna.  Big deal.  I can choose to play today or not.  It makes no difference whatsoever except insofar as it amuses me an the others who choose to participate.  If you're not amused, the solution is simple:  stay away.

Penderecki 8
Verdi 6 +2 = 8

Rautavaara 12
Lindberg 16 - 2 = 14

like the way people are now saying "this is ridiculous" as if Barber going into their hallowed hall of fame was the ridiculous part. The ridiculous part is that you are taking this so seriously and have taken it seriously in the past. The ridiculous part is to have a hall of fame of composers and think it's a sensible or worthwhile thing to discuss. The ridiculous part is that you are arguing over whether composers should or should not be in the hall of fame, when you've not defined what is meant by being in the hall of fame, or any other prerequisites for deciding to be in the hall of fame, other than by the mechanics that were divised to make this game work. I actually can't believe that you people have the power to vote in general elections.

Makes you wonder if there's a correlation between humorlessness and stupidity, eh?  As for the idiocy of voters:  my God, man!  Have you never seen the boobs offered as candidates?  And it might not be possible to underestimate the intelligence of the average voter, as nearly every election I've witnessed proves.  Hell, one American political party even specializes in promising pie in the sky to the ignorant, and half the people in the country believe it!

You might be interested in Bryan Caplan's recent The Myth of the Rational Voter:  Why Democracies Choose Bad Politics.  According to Louis Menand's recent review in The New Yorker, Caplan disagrees with those who think the average voter is merely ignorant.  Caplan argues that they're not so much ignorant as just plain wrong!  But still:
Quote from: MenandThe political knowledge of the average voter has been tested repeatedly, and the scores are impressively low.  In polls taken since 1945, a majority of Americans have been unable to name a single branch of government, define the terms "liberal" and "conservative," and explain what the Bill of Rights is.  ...apart from ignorance of the basic facts, most people simply do not think politically.  They cannot see, for example, that the opinion that taxes should be lower is incompatible with the opinion that there should be more government programs.  ...[their] opinions are not based on information or derived from a coherent political philosophy.  They are largely attitudinal and ad hoc.

Who said anything about your postings re. classical music?  You're still not reading very carefully or thinking very clearly, nor showing any signs of the humility that makes learning possible--thus the unflattering comparison to Saul and Sean proves not entirely inaccurate.  Doesn't that give you pause?

As for your charges impugning my character:  I certainly admit to exaggeration for effect.  That's a common rhetorical device and one of the mainsprings of humor.  But deception?  No way, dude!  However, that you think I've "a penchant...for deception" is rather revealing of your own penchant for deception, especially in light of your prior claim that:

You should have left the field after that.  Each time you return to engage me only betrays the lie.  And it recalls your return to this thread almost immediately after stating that Barber's election to the HOF was such a travesty that it signaled time for you to leave--in a self-righteous, snooty huff, no less!  What a hoot!  And the really hilarious part is that you take yourself so damned seriously that you don't see the ridiculousness of your own behavior!  And come to think of it, that's another trait you share with the aforementioned comrades--a weak sense of humor, crippled by self-importance and the inability to laugh at oneself.  Think about it, man!  You're never too old to learn!

And now I'd best leave the field to you, while I'm still more amused than riled, lest this exchange turn truly nasty.  And speaking of nasty:  don't forget to vote early, and vote often!  ;)

As I expected, you offer no citation to support your claim that postings of mine are contradicted by overwhelming evidence, more deception on your part.  Also, your attempt to lump me in with Saul and Sean only reveals that you have been unwilling to engage in this communication on a 'one-on-one' basis, feeling the need to use others as part of your arsenal.

As for my weak sense of humor, that's a matter of opinion.  Some folks enjoy my sense of humor, others don't.  I have no opinion of your sense of humor.

Thinking back, this whole thing between us started when your postings went into attack mode subsequent to my comment that Barber's music was far below HOF status.  That seemed to really get under your skin, but I never indicated that Barber was some kind of hack composer or that his music was not worthy of a recorded legacy.  As it happens, I have about 15 discs devoted to Barber and give them a spin now and then.  I do prefer Creston and Diamond, but I wouldn't place them anywhere near HOF status either.

So, you blew this Barber thing all out of proportion.  Just admit it to yourself and get over it.
