Title: Library CD check-outs
Post by: ChamberNut on March 03, 2008, 04:50:43 AM
Thought I'd start a separate thread, so as not to clutter the "Purchases Today" thread.

Library trip on the weekend and came out with the following:

Schubert - The Late Sonatas D958, D959, D960/Impromptus D899

Claudio Arrau
Philips

Schubert - Symphonies 1-4; Rosamunde Ballet Music; Weber - Der Freischutz Overture

Berliner Philharmoniker
Herbert Von Karajan
EMI Classics

Kronos Caravan - Various world music, featuring Kronos Quartet
Nonesuch label

Sibelius - Symphony No. 2 Op.43; Romance in C major for string orchestra, Op. 42

Neeme Jarvi
Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra
BIS

Corigliano - The Red Violin Concerto

Joshua Bell - violin
Marin Alsop
Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Mozart - Don Giovanni

Here's what I borrowed recently:

Beethoven, sonatas 21, 26, 23
Emil Giles
DG

Schubert, symphonies 8 and 9
Karajan, Berlin Phil
DG

Both excellent discs. Giles' tone is a little metallic for my tastes, particulary in the high notes of sonata 23.

Let us know how you like the Red Violin Concerto Chamber Nut! I like Corigliano and had my interest piqued when Bell played his new sonata for violin and piano in Ann Arbor last year (I'm slightly wary of Bell's playing as a rule though).

Dana,

Only 1 listen so far, but I didn't particularly enjoy the Red Violin Concerto.

However, the Sonata for violin and piano is on this disc as well, and I enjoyed that alot more!  :)

Exactly. For example, according to the law, this is not criminal:

But morally it's an outrage.  ;D

I don't think so. What if you just kept checking out the same cd? Then everyone else couldn't check out that cd, and that would make you an ass. By copying it to your computer or burning a copy, more people have access to it :)

I used to go to the library alot, but the cds were in poor condition, and it just became easier to download.

Very good point!  That is the one downfall I've had with library CDs.  Both Don Giovanni copies I checked out had some bad scratches, making certain spots unplayable.  >:(

However, in terms of selection, I've been really impressed at the library, especially the downtown Millenium Library.  The selection and variety is humongous!

That's great. I, too, am blessed with a very extensive collection through our system.  I can search the catalog online and have things delivered to my local branch from any of the other branches in our system.  All sorts of "obscure" things like the symphonies of Pettersson, music of Pfitzner, virtually the entire Hyperion and Naxos catalogs...just to name a few oddball examples.

And... Nielsen, symphonies 1&6, Blomstedt, SFS

I also picked up Franz Hummel's (b. 1939) piano concerto thinking it was Johaan Hummel's from the baroque period. Big disappointment when I got home  :'(

The only Franz Hummel I've heard is his opera Gesualdo. I wasn't impressed, so I hope this accidental piano concerto is better.

Hey, you nut, did you rent a U-Haul to get all that home?  ;D  Some really great stuff there (the Sinopoli/Studer Salome is high on my want list). It looks like a selection I could have made.

Fortunately, at our Millenium Library, there is an extensive classical music section.  Definetely a great (not to mention inexpensive) way to explore works/composers I haven't yet heard.   :)

I will continue to look for some more KB recordings in the future.   :)

Eyeresist, just listening to Symphony No. 1 right now.  It's ok, but not particularly interesting.  I am a bit disappointed so far, as there is nowhere near the energy in this symphony, as compared to the string quartets of Taneyev's that I've heard.

I hope for something more in Symphony No. 3.   :)

How do you find the time to listen to all that?

Check out time for books and CDs are 3 weeks, and you can renew for another 3 week period if they haven't been requested by anyone.  So, there's lots of time to have a chance to get to them all, but on occasion I don't end up listening to a particular disc, or a portion thereof.

Recently I've been broadening my interpretive horizons by dipping into the Universal special reissue series, "Great Conductors of the 20th Century." So far I've checked out the albums featuring Rafael Kubelik, Paul Kletzki, Eugene Ormandy, Karel Ancerl, Ferenc Fricsay, Dmitri Mitropoulos, Nicolai Malko and Rudolf Kempe, which was given to me by mistake by the audio desk when I requested Serge Koussevitzky. Today I also got Kubelik's SOBR Brahms cycle.

What do you need Kubelík's Brahms cycle for? Why would you want to waste your time with that second-rate crap? You already found and publically declared the "reference" recordings. Congratulations on that, BTW - I have listened to, played and studied Brahms' symphonies for a quarter of a century, and I haven't found a "reference" cycle yet.

OK, that makes sense. I just hope nobody requests the CDs you still want to listen to. If they do, you may have to find ways...to get rid of these people...just make it look like an accident. Then you can keep the CDs longer!

Yes - you are soooo unfair to "young, talented artists" who may be, well, "young and talented", but who don't really have the experience and maturity yet to tackle some of the classical repertoire's most substantial works - but their agents and record companies push them to do so anyway.
At the same time, "Superhorn" summarily dismisses all artists in the "HIP" sector, many of which are highly "talented", too, while maybe not so "young" anymore, and some of which have decades of very solid performing experience.
But no, it is you who is totally "unfair", not him.

I know my wrongdoings. Superhorn is always right. I apologize again. Perhaps Dudamel and Lang Lang are the best in their field. Combine the two in a piano concerto and you have the greatest recording of anything of all time. The day a CD like that is released is the day I dump my entire collection into the middle of pacific ocean and start listening only to that for the rest of my life.

Just a little curious: did the library have any other performances of the WTC?

Not at the branch I visited.  That was the only copy (perhaps some others were checked out).  However, if you want Goldberg Variations, there are about two dozen or more copies of these!  :o  Too bad it's not the other way around.  :-\

I really liked it.  Although it was only Book I.  I've never heard Book II yet.

I'm listening to Hewitt Book I right now.  Very, very nice!  :)

Pleased to know.

Right next to me are the box of LvB quartets and the first Hewitt WTC. Just finished listening to Op. 59/3 and Op. 131, and now about to listen to Book 1. :) The C minor NEEDS to be played now.

??? ??? ???

To my knowledge Kempff neither recorded the complete WTC book I nor the complete WTC book II. All he recorded were excerpts from both books (all in all amounting to about one third of it), and all of it was released on a CD by DG several years ago.

Only once when I borrowed Kodaly's Haydn op.9 quartets I've had problems. One of the two disks was in three pieces, literally.

John Tavener

Eternity's Sunrise

Paul Goodwin

Music for Alonso* Alfonso The Wise (!)

I have at least heard of the composer in the previous case and the orchestra is pretty well-known, but this one is a completely uncharted territory - for me.

Both discs are from Harmonia Mundi.

Penderecki - Konzert for viola and Kammerorchester

I don't know the Penderecki, but the Hindemith and Britten works are exquisite.

Callas' Carmen
Les Chants de Nectaire by Koechlin
Levine's Ariadne auf Naxos (mainly for Battle's amazing Zerbinetta)
Voigt in Die Aegyptische Helena (what a ridiculous and thoroughly boring story. And the music seemed more tired than ever, apart from the wonderful effusion of the Zweite Brautnacht! aria)

Thanks to a generous donation , my library in New Rochelle has recently
obtained a veritable treasure trove of classical CDs ,and even installed
a listening room !

I have never checked out my local public library for classical music.  Years ago when I still lived in NY while in college, I did check out a few recordings but the SQ was not too flattering since the LP's were quite beat up ...

Had not been to the Millenium Library downtown, for quite some time.  They have quite a large and varied classical music section.

Got some Bizet, Britten, Walton, Martinu, Frank Martin and Schnittke!

I will post the details and pictures of recordings later today.  Almost all of these, with a few exceptions, will be first listens!  :)

Damn...great! Happy listening, Ray! 8) Let me know which ones you've enjoyed. That Britten/Gardner disc is outstanding as are those Schnittke, Poltera's Martin, and you just can't beat Previn in Walton's 1st which is in that Collected Works set. Of course, that Martinu/Belohlavek set is fantastic.
