Title: Shampoo
Post by: Mozart on March 12, 2008, 01:49:41 PM
Look at the word shampoo, it tells you everything you need to know about it. It's a combination of the word sham and poo which literally means it's fake shit. For the previous 22 years of my life, I would rinse and repeat every day, even multiple times a day, and my hair was horrible, puffy, it wouldn't do anything I asked it to. Over the last few months, I stopped shampooing every day to every other day, and I noticed that my hair was improving, when I didn't shampoo it, it was great. Since then I began shampooing less and less and now my hair will even stay back on it's own! Why do people use shampoo? It's 1 big scam and specially poor girls waste hundreds of dollars a year on useless garbage. I would like to propose an experiment to everyone, stop using shampoo for a month and see what your hair is like. My month begins today :)

Not to rain on your promenade, but of course, the origin of the word is Hindi, champo.

I've been told by many professionals that shampooing everyday is not good for your hair. They have given ranges from once-every-other -day to once a week regardless of how many times you shower (with or without a cap on) in between.
I shampoo once every 2 or 3 days, and it takes two days to get back to being manageable -just before I shampoo again  ;D

It may have a lot to do with the type of hair one has. I think shampoo dries out the hair, so for people with dry hair (such as mine) the less the better I guess, of if you are going to shampoo you may have to use some after treatment creams and lotions and such  :P

Everyone's hair gets oily at a different rate.  Mine has to be washed every other day.  A friend who rode the school bus with me needed to wash her hair twice a day.  By the time she rode home on the bus, her hair was full of grease even though she had washed it that same morning.

If you read the labels on the shampoo bottles, they will tell you what strength the shampoo is.

Is this the before and after photo of the woman who complained the most?  I certainly don't see what she complained about.

i have really thick hair, and to my detriment i have to shampoo daily. If i dont my hair is everywhere. And against water alone my hair stands in defiance holding its multi-pointed architecture that sleep has given it. But with the application of shampoo it loses the will to fight and then i can look decent.

So are we in agreement that shampoo's purpose is to wash oil out of the hair, and not necessarily to clean it? The first person I told this to, told me that my hair would be really stinky after a few days but I don't think it'll be the case.

The purpose of shampoo is to clean your hair of anything that made it dirty - including grease, sweat, dust or anything it has accumulated.
This presupposes that the dirt is water soluble, not something like oil-based paint.

shampoo is THE BIGGEST SCAM EVER.
I agree
absolute worst crap you can put on your hair.
Conditioners are EVEN WORSE.

But go to the hair salons, the VERY LATEST is all these shamms and conditioners in a  rainbow of colors.
ALL HARSH DAMAGING CHEMICALS
Yet women buy them by the 18 Wheeler loads.
Women are sooooo naive.
They also but *anti ageing creams* paying hundreds of $ for a  1 oz bottle.
Women are sooo vain

Back to shampoos.
absoute waste of money, as they ONLY DAMAGE YOUR hair.

Try natural glycerin bar soap from a  health foods, WF's company.
I wash every 2 or 3 days.
hair is better than ever.

The USA has thousands  of fraudulent type gimicks as part of its social fabric.
Like adding sugar on the raisins in rasin bran. Dumb and dumber.

Get this one *health insurance* :D

Not for me it isn't.  My hair get oily very fast, and I need to shampoo every day when I shower.  I use a volumizing shampoo that costs about $25 but lasts six months.

Obviously, what's good for one individual isn't necessarily good for others.  But extremely negative general comments about shampoo are nonsense.

Although I agree with you about shampoo being a waste of $$$, on what little hair I have I use soap, to no apparent detriment.

But my real reason for this post is that I have come up with some measure of solution for you and Sean, who both appear so very discontent with your home countries. Why don't YOU move to England, and Sean can come over to New Orleans. He seems to prefer Third World cities anyway. And then perhaps you will both find happiness, or at least, something new to bitch about. :)

A few years ago I got dandruff and couldn't understand why it had come. When I stopped using that particular shampoo, flakes were gone.
Now I keep using shampoo, but what other alternatives do I have? Soap? Mostly it's made of the same stuff, and I wonder how they dare ;D produce it when it is obviously harmful for hair. My mother complained that her hair deteriorated when she had started using shampoo.

Fortunately I do not have to use creams, lipstick, powder and many-many other frightening things. ;D Plus Californian sun, and the skin would shrink!

This presupposes that the dirt is water soluble, not something like oil-based paint.

Dirt which is water soluble would be removed by water alone.  Shampoo is essentially a detergent which allows water insoluble substances to become soluble in water.  A soap molecule has one hydrophobic (hates water) side which sticks to the greasy thing and one hydrophilic (loves water) side which allows it to go into solution, taking the greasy thing with it.  This way the greasy thing goes into solution and is washed away.

If something can't be removed with soap that means it dissolves neither in water nor in oil.

If you want you can wash your hair with soap.  Shampoo has some extra ingredients which prevent the hair from getting too dried out after washing, it's essentially a weak/gentle soap.

By the way, what is the quality of water in San Diego (you live there, right?) ? Did you measure pH level?  ;D
I know that the running water is usually being purified with some chemicals, after it becomes hard water. They make media basic because germs inhabit acidic environment, so they would die. Hard water dries skin and hair (you will tell us!), so maybe shampoos, as I assume they have slightly acidic properties, balance that pH level and as a result you get nice neutral water... Maybe. I learned that water in LA, at least in my district, is ozonized, not chlorized or fluorized, but I do not completely believe in it.
Too many problems to worry about, sooner or later we all will die. ;D

Well I am living in Tijuana Mexico, where the water smells like century old eggs. So yes, it probably does damage to my skin, my feet I've noticed are drier than ever. It's bad enough that I rather eat the pesticides on food instead of washing them in that water.

That means the water in your region is acidic, because the smell of rotten eggs is produced by hydrosulfuric acid (it's actually acid's gaseous state). Then you need soap, strongly basic soap! ;D Maybe... Admittedly, I know nothing about shampoos, mine one does not even say what pH level it contains.

Officially 1 week without shampooing. My hair doesn't smell and isn't greasy or anything. I do notice after I shower, when it is wet, my hair feels sticky. I've had a comment that my hair looked thicker, more volume. I found a blog of a woman who is doing the same experiment, except she washes her hair with baking soda and then rinses with apple vinegar.

Hope I can make it to my goal of a month, but I don't see any reason why I'd shampoo now. I'll only shampoo if a bird poos on me head.

If I could live a day without shampoo it would be bliss; I'd save a lot of money. But if I don't shampoo, my hair is gross and unsightly. My hair is luminous, full, and lighter when I do shampoo so I really can't complain.

Officially 1 week without shampooing. My hair doesn't smell and isn't greasy or anything. I do notice after I shower, when it is wet, my hair feels sticky. I've had a comment that my hair looked thicker, more volume. To be honest at first i thought this thread was a little, lets say b.s. for lack of better words. But i skimmed through that link and that is pretty interesting. So yeah go for the full month! But you might need to go the whole vinegar route not too far from now, i mean how long can anyones hair stay devoid of nastiness? Good Luck but Poo and me are cool for now, the last thing i need is more volume, christ its too much to deal with already.

Isn't vinegar HIGHLY acidic?  Wassup with dat?

However, the baking soda makes a lot of sense ........ I might try baking soda, honey, and beer .........

Vinegar and baking soda... hey that's how I clean my coffeemaker. ;D

Actually it's pretty cool just how much cleaning you can do with just those two things. :)

And to add some real excitement to your hair-care experience, use them both at the same time!   ;D

If you have to regularly decalcify your hair, you might have more problems to worry about then what brand of shampoo to use... :D

Alright, so I ended up loosing my before picture, so I shampooed my hair on April 6, and not since then. My hair actually looked good I think on April 6, but I think its because before that I hadn't shampooed it for a good month also. Personally, I think my hair is better now, this will sound girly but I like looking at when I go near a mirror because its shiny kind of. It tends to stay in place now also. Now if I could only get a hairstyle I'd be in business.

I expect that once I have fully new unshampooed hair, It'll be better.
