Ithaka is a marvelously atmospheric work evocative of the sea - absolutely one of my favorite works for solo voice and orchestra. I'm sure you already know his late cantata Sången (The Song), another beautiful and stirring vocal work of his.

Regarding Excelsior! (great title), I always feel that the rest of the work doesn't quite live up to the supercharged, heroic opening with its prominent horn parts. And I think most who've heard the Serenade can agree it's a masterpiece. The first movement, in particular, features some marvelous string writing. I don't agree with Stenhammar's choice to discard the Reverenza movement and I appreciate Järvi's recording for including it. And yes, I also found the much-lauded Blomstedt recording of the Serenade and Symphony No. 2 to be underplayed and too "civilized". Järvi père all the way in Stenhammar!

The other day I gave Sangen a listen (the BIS recording) and I was captured by the soaring choral writing, particularly, once again. A magnificent piece.

The Wind of Siberia should be better known. It's like the Russian counterpart to Sibelius's Tapiola. A very atmospheric symphonic poem.

Ireland: Tritons
Kodály: Theatre Overture

Two exceptional orchestral works that highlight their respective nationalistic accent.

The only other installment of the series to do that was [IIRC] the Jordi Savall recording of Farnace.

Not quite. The lute music comes from that older recording. The mandolin music is newly recorded in 2006 - and this is volume 26 in the series so not that early on.

Stabat Mater is a reissue of an earlier album that predates the series concept. I think there might be one or two others that have at least some old recordings, but I'm not going to check them just now.  The Farnace recording is somewhat different as the original release was on a different record label (Savall's own), so Naive licensed it.

In total there are 2 mandolin concertos, a concerto for lute and viola d'amore, a chamber concerto for lute and 2 violins, and 2 trio sonatas for lute and violin (and continuo).

It's completely marvellous and making me wish this wasn't the sum total of Vivaldi's music featuring these instruments.

I have a fantasy where I get a Standel combo amp to put my JBL D123 in.

If there was ever an "audiophile" guitar amp it was the Standel, which was first produced in the early '50s.

The model I would choose has the 7591 power tubes
