Noting here that, in addition to the Melodiya purchases I outlined in the other thread, I've also picked up Mackerras' new Beethoven cycle (so that's another one, Que! ;D), a few Stokowski discs to start filling that gap in my collection, and Hamelin's new recording of the Alkan Concerto for Solo Piano. I'll give you my impressions on any of these that might interest you, once I've done some listening! :)

(Yes, heavy-buying day. But I called for backup, as my mother was visiting, and thus immediately available for - let's say - "direct funding". ;))

The funding looks OK to me!  ;D
What Stokowski items did you get?

EDIT: just saw the Stokowski Decca box set on the listening thread. :)

For the moment.

However, I've also the following in my Amazon shopping basket, as part of an order hopefully due by mid-December:

Last, but certainly not least:

Stokowski fascinates me. And my collection has previously been devoid of his work, so I thought, "if I'm filling that gap, I'd better do it properly!" ;)

Oh, and I'm also keeping an eye out for this, on account of the Tannhäuser overture (though I've not added it to the order with the above):

Niiiiceee! :) I had a bit of a Stokowski craze myself, a while back. Unfortunately those box sets hadn't appeared yet! :-\

That one is recommended! Quintessentially Stokowski.

The Tchaikovsky on Pearl was not as awesome as I had hoped - for a historical Tchaikovsky try Mengelberg's 4, 5 & 6 (OOP on Pearl, but in very good transfers on Opus Kura)
Some more recommendations by me and others to be found on the short lived Stokowski thread on the old forum!

I forgot to add the one Stokowski performance I previously had, to the above list:

Concerning the Tchaikovksy, is it then worth switching with the "Rhapsodies" disc, in that Amazon order?

To be honest, the main reason I wanted that Pearl disc was for the potential "awesome" factor already inherent in a work like Tchaikovsky's 4th, and so even more so in Stokowski's hands; but if it's just a curio, perhaps I need reallocate. ;)

Incidentally, and since you mentioned Mengelberg, this is also in the upcoming order:

New from Amazon.co.uk marketplace.  £1.25 delivered (yes it was delivered).  ;)
Not HIP Glinka but I really did not have an option here, or did I?  ;)

ps. There have been HIP recordings of Glinka's chamber and solo (pianoforte) works but I don't have them
in my collection either.  For some reasons, there is actually more HIP Tchaikovsky on record.
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!

Thanks Mark but I have been 71 dB here for a long time.  ;) Yesterday I was in a rage because people wrote about petition of removing outer movements on Elgar's symphonies (some people here are totally nuts:o ) so I almost deleted my account!! Today I am calmed down and I restored my name...

...I can't believe what people keep writing about Elgar. Who can be so evil?  :'(

Class, today we're going to discuss the meaning of the word "irony."

That's a dead end road in this case, shortears...... ;D

If the Elgar haters are fine looking women, I don't mind doing to them what you suggested Poju.......
Sorry, I simply could not resist, it was a open window you know, knowing me knowing you, there is not much I can do ;D

Masolino, did you deliberately passed the Gergiev?  :)
In other words: have you heard Gergiev and were you disappointed in that?

Q

No, I have not heard the Gergiev (the same recording as his DVD?) but then I never
found the Gergiev at £1 a pop either. :P  I know this longstanding rivalry between
Bolshoi and Mariinsky (Kirov) and heard that Bolshoi actually could do very well against its
now better known rival and so....  :)

ps. Never mind what Christophe Huss wrote (again).   He strikes me as being none other
than a French David Hurwitz.   The sound (in the stereo mode anyway) is really fine,
not the sh*t that he described.  I don't know about the interpretation... and won't
either in lieu of a testimony from Glinka himself ;)

I don't believe women could hate Elgar. All haters must be ugly men.  :P

It seems to me that even men don't hate Elgar either, as he used to be on all the
£20 bills until very recently.  ;)
