Bernstein -Mahler Symphonies
Abbado with the Lucerne Festival Orch - ALL of them are very good
Gergiev/Kirov just recorded a complete "Swan Lake". To be released in a few days
Any of the C. Kleiber "New Years Day" concerts with the VPO, and the one with Karajan/Battle
C. Kleiber /COA- Beethoven Sym 4 and 7
Verdi Requiem - Karajan, Price, Cossotto, Pavarotti, Ghiuarov
"Good", is NOT good enough, when "better" is expected

I love the Opus Arte DVD sets of Rameau's "Les Indes galantes" and "Les Boréades".
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

That's why I let the anger out.  ;)

Frankly, the club of "People who don't get Elgar" has posted too much BS.

Thanks Harry!  ;) People who like Elgar aren't offended by it.
I fight for our right to enjoy Elgar without being classified as weirdos.   :P

Grigory Sokolov in Paris! The very best piano recital on video. It gives a true picture of a great pianist being totally united with the composer's music and the instrument to present it to us.

uffeviking

For pure overwhelming visual effects the Alexander Sokurov film Russian Ark would be difficult to better!

"A journey through 300 years of Russian history - Filmed with a cast of thousands, three live orchestras and an army of technicians...."

With Ebert and Roeper giving it TWO thumbs up, it has to be good!  :)

I would like to nominate the following opera DVDs as essential for any collection:

I am an avid collector of opera DVDs (although I have a very long way to catch up to Lis  0:) our true opera DVD specialist) and since we already have a thread discussing opera DVDs exclusively I just wanted to highlight 3 that I consider superb in all aspects.  The 3 operas posted above SHINE in more ways than you can possibly imagine.  The first two are Opera movies the third is a live performance.  ALL ARE VISUALLY STUNNING (Eye Candy unlike anything I've seen), the sound quality is unbelievable good, the costumes the singing everything is just perfect.

For Ballets I would like to nominate this:

  a truly wonderful, "creamy" performance.

and this operetta always puts a smile on my face (truly hilarious) conducted by Placido Domingo who actually interacts with the singers DURING THE PERFORMANCE   :o :o  and has a celebrity guest appearance, I will not tell you who but he is a very popular French singer  ;) (this is must see as well):

I consider a DVD production whether an opera, a ballet etc.  a "hit" if it is able to transport me into a mythical world far away from this one and all of those listed above are quite successful at attaining that goal.

Oh what joy it is to be in total agreement with a fellow GMGer! Everyone of yours, Marvin, is a hit with me also, especially the Meistersinger! This performance was a complete surprise to me because neither Levine nor James Morris are exactly dear to me heart, but in this one, they both shine! I have the impression Morris was happy to finally portray a human being, instead of a god. And what a great job he did!

The Fledermaus I have also and Domingo has no problem conducting because most classical orchestras can play this one in their sleep; a nice touch though interacting with the singers. Now if you want to see another interaction, this one even better, is the Fledermaus from Glyndebourne with Vladimir Jurowski getting the best of Prince Orloff! Every time I watch this one I am backscrolling to see the scene at least two more times! The impression on the prince's face, only lasting a moment, is a masterpiece of acting!

Lethevich

Looks like I'm going to need to get that Fledermaus... I only have the Kleiber/DG one atm, which is musically and visually very nice, and with a few good comic touches.

Lethe, your profile does not disclose your gender, but if you are female hold on to your hormones. If you are male and have a significant other, enjoy her reaction to this scandalously flirting conductor!  ::)

This is a normal off topic jest, so leave a little room for it will ya. :)

Didn't reduce your room at all, simply reminded you of the subject's title. I could have deleted the 'off topic' posts, see how nice I am?  0:)
