Igor Stravinsky's ballet music is not always easy on the ears, but satisfying for the soul it is any time.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

the phone rings and somebody says,
"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 6, Waltz Suite. Alsop/Sao Paulo. The latest installment in this series features a spacious and engaging Sixth Symphony and a delightful Waltz Suite (waltzes from Cinderella, Lermontov film score and War & Peace which work marvelously together). Recommended.

I had forgotten how good a conductor Abbado was when he put his mind into the work at hand - that is, before he was elected MD of the Berlin Philharmonic. The LSO in the Bartok play magnificently.

I tend to agree with your assessment. That said, I think the overall quality did improve in the second half (having heard a few and read about others). I decided not to get the box, but instead get the discs that seemed most interesting to me. I then got the VPO New Year's Box, which has been absolutely fabulous, especially the price I got it at (which has a mix of composers, so not exactly the same thing). Though, I do keep an eye on this pricewise in case it becomes a steal...

This is the third Grofe cd I've listened to in the last few days. I have to admit that this is the one that makes mr think Grofe is worth some of my time. Great performance. Kunzel gets it just right. Sorry,Bernstein! The taped thunder claps are truly spectacular and fun. Catfish Row is fantastic. The Hurricane is spectacular. That said,I really do need something deeper now! A pile of cds of Mahler's Seventh are currently waiting (I got the mahler bug from Sarge I think?) It is catching!!
