Ordered from Hyperion before the end of their £2.5 disc sale. (Just seven of these are actually part of that campaign so don't get too excited.)

Most of it I have too, so I know there is a lot to enjoy. Great haul my friend.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

One of my criticisms of classical discussion groups is that there are too many "negative waves".  This composer is too atonal, this performer is too whatever.  So I am hesitant to be too critical.  One man's meat is another man's poison.

For my ears these were weak performances.  I am familiar with some of the works.  One of my favorites is A Stopwatch and an Ordinance Map.  I was about thirty seconds into that track before I realized what they were singing.

However I did find one positive review: http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2015/Oct/Barber_choral_SOMMCD0152.htm

Tried Shostakovich 4 again, Kitajenko

Something is wrong, I thought. It is not in Shostakovich's nature to write something so boring.

Then I found a sample of Haitink's LPO recording (my other recordings of this symphony are currently inaccessible). Another thing entirely! On order...

I am so fond of Haitink's Shostakovich, particularly his 15th. One of the great cycles.

Along with his recording of the 10th symphony, the 4th was the first of Haitink's Decca Shostakovich series. Over the years it was not very well received by critics, which is a shame. It was my first DSCH 4 and I loved the recording (on LP, so it's been gone for many years now). Maybe I should buy it on cd. There's a refusal of hysterics, a stoicism to his interpretations that I find a sane counterpart to more overtly dramatic interpretations (Kondrashin, Rozhdestvensky).

And yes, his 15th is agreat version !

Pre-order Félicien David 3CD set.  Sampled Christophe Colomb: pretty cool.  Closer to "Le Désert" than "Herculanum"

Could not resist this new recording of C.P.E. Bach by Alexei Lubimov on the Tangent piano

His Haydn Seven last word of Christ was spectacular on this instrument.

I used to shun Haitink for his "neutral" interpretations, but I have come to value that quality, along with the exquisite control of orchestral balance. I'm especially a fan of his early work, particularly Concertgebouw Bruckner and Mahler cycles. I'm looking forward to the Shostakovich.

Good stuff, that! Very enchanting, strange sound on that instrument.

In any case, a David collection must include this mesmerizing, gorgeous travelogue:

I was thinking it can be overly positive, too quick to throw around words like "mandatory."

But that's not actually contradictory to what you're saying. A lot of standard rep pieces have dozens of recordings, and many will be good without being distinctive.

Love those Szymanowski performances, Karl. The Royal String Quartet do the composer proud I think.

Actually all of the other classical music forums that I have been involved with are much worse.

This forum is actually pretty good.  :)

Just now. The Monteverdi is listed as Low stock, so I have to cross my fingers

Both boxes are excellent value. Artistically I rate them very high!
