Pounds the table and breaks it.

Thanks for the encouragement.  :)

I was hesitating since I already have the 4 discs by Justus Frantz & Christoph Eschenbach (EMI), which are really excellent.

And it's not on period instruments, but they used instruments with greater clarity by Fazioli instead of Steinway.

Finally pulled the trigger on this set:

[asin]B01L32LU7K[/asin]

Under USD $40 shipped, I simply could not resist.

Many here at GMG helped make this decision an easy one.

Special thanks to Harry for his ability to motivate me with his blog!  Thanks buddy, I am looking forward to it.   ;)

Ohhh that is good news. I am sure this is going to give you much pleasure.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Yes, I have that one too and it's indeed splendid. Too bad it's not complete (Tal & Groethuysen is)

For period instruments, try these single discs:

I endorse (easily) the Staier/Lubimow disc ... don't know the Levin/Bilson, guess I should look for it as well.

Just bought:

I'm a huge fan of Thielemann's Bruckner and I do hope he records all of Bruckner's symphonies with the Staatskapelle.

There's also this single disc for the fortepiano duos, doesn't look bad at all...

And this superb box includes the Divertissiment à la Hongroise, Fantasy in f minor D. 940, and Marche caractéristique D. 886/2.

Some of today's purchases have been inspired by recommendations/comments from fellow GMGers. Thanks !

(A reissue of this recording, which had so far escaped my attention):

My favourite Butterfly, which I used to have on cassette.

I like this one very much, which was a big surprise back when I first listened.

Thanks for the suggestions!  :)

It's not very helpful that Divertissiment à la Hongroise seems the standard choice of repertoire.... ::)  8)

My favourite Butterfly, which I used to have on cassette.
It's certainly beautifully captured. Freni is marvelous.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

André

She never sang it on stage, finding the part emotionally overwhelming. We have 2 recordings to thank for her assumption of this role. The fragility of Puccini's 'little woman' comes through genuinely as it doesn't with Tebaldi or Scotto.

Wonderful set!

So that just leaves No. 14 left for me to complete this Shostakovich symphony cycle.
