Bram Beekman plays some early Bach preludes, BWV 1101 through to 1120 at St Jan's Cathedral in Hertogenbosch.

The church's website says the organ is tuned "ewenredig swenvend", it sounds very good, but what is it? Is it really equal temperament?

Newish release from Chief Justice John G. Roberts featuring an RLPO in very fine form.

It is good. My overall recommended version though would be this one:

I wish Schoeberg's SQ NO 4 would be programmed alongside Bartok's SQ no3/4

Various bits of Scriabin

[asin]B000W4E3OS[/asin]

2 Mazurkas, op.40
Poeme tragique, op.34
Three pieces, op.45
Piano Sonata No.8, op.66

I really wish Scriabin's works weren't quite so fragmentary. I could even do with a few more 3-minute pieces, like the poeme which I like a lot. But a ridiculous number of them are over in 90 seconds or less.

And then you get to the sonatas, and they're superb.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

listening to LvB from this.  It's like doing tequila shots while polishing off an 8-ball.  Heady stuff.

Yes, equal temperament. Unfortunately many of the greatest historical organs in Holland are equally tuned (Schnitger/Alkmaar, Müller/Harlem, Müller/Leeuwarden e.g.).
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

A new addition:

Songs from the 2nd half of the 16th c. on texts by Pierre de Ronsard, composed by François Regnard, Guillaume Boni, Jean de Castro and Philippe de Monte.
Delightful performances by the Ensemble Clément Janequin under director Dominique Visse.

The Esterhazy retinue were the ultimate bourgeois avant la lettre

Could you please substantiate this claim?

and Haydn was fond of surprising them with all kinds of tricks and traps such as false endings, bassoon farts, retuning in the middle of a movement, etc. He became famous for (among many other things) his ingenious, bottomless bag of tricks. These « special effects » should not be smoothed over, but be given their full due.  :)

The problem with all this is that Haydn's tricks and traps were understood, enjoyed, awaited and praised by the audience --- while "epater le bourgeois" was all about scandalizing the audience with incomprehensible, unpleasant, unexpected and not particularly endearing provocations. How do you explain this discrepancy?

Indeed! :) Lulu Suite is a quite a fine work and I prefer it to the opera itself. I haven't heard that performance with Szeryng/Kubelik of the VC, but have you heard the Mutter/Levine performance? This is the performance that got me hooked on Berg. I'm not an opera buff, but I do feel quite strongly about a number of operas I've heard over the years that have stayed with me since the initial listen.

No, I have not heard the Mutter/Levine performance; I obviously should  ;D

Beautiful set, and full of fond memories for me. I was given a 45 rpm disc of selections from it as a present from  by my babysitter when I was 6 years old...  :)

After an entire disc of Platti (HERE), this time 3 Platti cello sonatas (which seem the best of the bunch) and 3 Vivaldi sonatas.
Performances  by Sebastian Hess and Axel Wolf quite impress: a gentle but dynamic flow, well articulated.
The use of the lute and theorbo for the continuo part works really well.

If they record the remainder of the Vivaldi sonatas, which seems likely, count me in....  :)

JS Bach: Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II, Prelude & Fugues Bwv 870-872 [Landowska]....

I am a fan of Landowska and I have always enjoyed her playing. These recordings, however, do not represent her in her best light as they sound thin and without weight and presence. To be fair the recordings are over sixty years old but unfortunately do not represent the harpsichord to its best advantage. The playing, however, is beyond reproach.

CD 13 & 14 of this box. Second rerun, and still a marvel to listen to.

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.
