JC Bach: Symphonies Op. 18 Nos. 1 & 2 [Halstead]

cilgwyn

I just love Holbrooke's use of brass and I,seriously, can't get enough of his, always (to my ear 'oles! ::) ;D)  ear ticklingly, inventive orchestration. Late romanticism with a gothic twist. The booklet describes the Amontillado Overture, based on the famous story by Poe and his tone poem,The Viking, based on the Longfellow poem (The Skeleton in Armour) as gloomy and melancholy. Yes,and, like Amontillado and Ulalume, very gothic in terms of atmosphere. His Variations on "Three Blind Mice" are Holbrooke in lighter mode. Again, while they are not the most tightly argued set of variations I have ever heard,it's Holbrooke's colourful orchestration that keeps me listening. It really,is candy to my ears. He even brings in some music hall at one point, and I love the way he brings in,For He's a Jolly good Fellow and the British Grenadiers,in the rousing finale. Yet,there's also a touch of that gothic atmosphere, here ,as well. As to Ulalume. I think this perfectly evokes Poe's famous poem and,to be honest,it's the best of the lot! I only wish Beecham could have recorded this one (or,The Raven?). At the same time I can't help thinking of the opener to an episode of Cheers, where (relying on memory here!) Frasier is reciting The Raven, and someone says "it's Poe",whereupon Coach rebukes the man for being rude (it's a nice poem!).
Please record some Holbrooke,Chandos! I beg of you!! (My constant posting about Holbrooke was probably one reason why they dumped their Forum! SPAM,SPAM and more SPAM,but a Holbrooke fan?!! Yee-ikes! ??? ;D).

Incidentally,a hail storm has just started, here. The noise is terrific. It's absolutely pelting down.....and I mean pelting down!! Nothing unusual in that?!! Erm,it's July!! ??? :o

Rameau: Pieces de clavecin [1724], Suite in D major [Christie]

Wonderful music well played on a fine sounding instrument in a very good recording.

Yes, late last night/early this morning, just to the west of you, we had a rather ominous thunder storm. We sent the best part on towards you guys though  ;)  ;D

Hail storms are more common here in warmer weather. I take it that's not true for you?
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Not unusual for Wales, mate. (No Tom Jones pun intended.) What's unusual is that we've managed about 2 months with little more than a couple of light showers.

I wouldn't normally give out a weather report here;but it was a bit different, and the noise really was quite startling! Thanks for the weather,by the way!! >:( ;D  Not that I'm complaining. It's always quieter here when the weather's bad! I would say, bring it on;but you've got to be careful, these days. It was only the other week I was watching the old British sci-fi movie,The Day the Earth Caught Fire. Rather good, actually. I'd put it on one side, because I thought it would be boring (no aliens or giant insects!).

VW's Oboe concerto. I've actually never heard this before. This cd set arrived today. I haven't heard some of these recordings before. I'm quite excited at the prospect of hearing Barbirolli's Sinfonia Antartica, being a fan of the symphony. It's also nice to be listening to a composer I don't need to defend!! ::) ;D

Good morning all.

Starting the day with a music trip to Istanbul.

Yes,I think you're right, come to think of it,Maestro! It was just the sudden noise! I've got to keep off all these apocalyptic movies! It'll be great if the hail comes back when I'm listening to the Sinfonia Antartica,or,better still, snow!! I can go out to the shop like Captain Oates.

On now,VW's Tuba concerto. Now,I like this very much. Again,I haven't heard this work before.

Telemann: Viola Concerto [Edlinger]

One of the first CDs that I bought. I still love the sound of that particular viola.

That seems to be turning out to be a particularly interesting purchase. I do not know either of the concertos featured. I am a fan of Barbirolli so I will be interested to read how you get on with the Sinfonia Antartica.

I've just started listening to it,now! So too early to pass comment, yet! As I said, this is the first time I've ever heard this recording. I liked the Tube concerto, very much. Yes,definitely worth hearing. And as soon as I start listening to the Sinfonia Antartica,it brightens up!! ::) ;D

You definitely got your timing all wrong there  ;D

I agree with you, this is another Holbrooke recording of great worth, I had it quite some time in my collection....time seem to fly with rapid strides when one gets older.
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Wow! This is a fast one! (I'm listening to Mars, right now). Quite a contrast to Herrmann! Sort of,Roadrunner Hoo ;D (by comparison) this time;but maybe not quite that fast?! This seems to be cited as one of the best recordings,by some,I gather?! I like this recording. Although,I haven't played it that much;not having had it for that long. Also,The Planets isn't my favourite work by this composer. I picked this earlier issue, because I wasn't so keen on having Also Sprach on the same cd. The Ligeti rounds off the cd,very nicely, for me! :) I really like this less conventional choice.
Incidentally,is this the fastest Mars on record?! If Herrmann's is the slowest?!!

This is my favourite manifestation of Steinberg's famous recording. Coincidentally I listened to it last night in preparation for the non-appearance of the 'Blood Moon' due to cloudy conditions here (can't have cilgwyn being the only one providing weather updates on this thread). I much prefer the Ligeti (2001) coupling to the Richard Strauss (also 2001) alternative.
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

This arrived today. Playing.....putting it on,actually, right now!!
