Mahlerian

Not a huge fan or anything, but I had to get in on celebrating the composer birthday today....

Wolpe: Battle Piece

Stefan Wolpe, born August 25, 1902.  Were you expecting someone else?
"l do not consider my music as atonal, but rather as non-tonal. I feel the unity of all keys. Atonal music by modern composers admits of no key at all, no feeling of any definite center." - Arnold Schoenberg

Antoine et Cléopâtre

Lush and sumptuous, such a delight!

Stanford: Symphony No. 1 [Handley]

This is a very assured work with a definite voice of its own for a first symphony. It is well constructed [even if a little over long], lyrical and well scored. It has an interesting array of tones and textures. The musical language is straightforward, very accessible and appealing.

Thats desert island stuff for me! How you liking it, aligreto?

Oh, wonderful indeed. I can readily understand your sentiments. I will conclude with disc 2 tomorrow  :)

Agreed.  One of Schmitt's best scores.

(Most skillfully-crafted might be more appropriate.)

Schubert: Selection of Lieder [sung by Schwarzkopf]

Simple but delightful music that is beautifully performed.

Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - Solti/CSO.

"You overestimate my power of attraction," he told her. "No, I don't," she replied sharply, "and neither do you".

Kontrapunctus

Extraordinary playing and very good sound.

Kontrapunctus

Just the Quintet. I prefer it with Sudbin or Pollini and their respective Quartets--more powerful. If you want the lyricism emphasized, then this is a good choice.

Matthias Kirschnereit's plays Handel's organ concertos on piano...I recommend this to anyone who's open to this sort of thing. Many might not be but, anyway, I find this to be delightful. I'm happy I discovered this and the one before it (op.4). Really, this is a pleasure.

I'm listening to the complete work for the 1st time. My verdict: sublime.

Ravel at his most psychedelic. This is just brilliant and highly original. It's true the statement that says every genius has a bit of madness. Perhaps Ravel didn't have a bit, but a lot! I'm very delighted listening to this  :)

Bridge, Piano Sonata

[asin]B000FVGLIY[/asin]
Regularly reported as a key work and the start of Bridge's late style. So I've been looking forward to this one as I've gone through the chronology.

This is certainly large-scale, ambitious stuff. There are traces of Romanticism, but no light, pretty melodies for the salon to enjoy.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.
