Oh, it's real.

Don't remember it being that good of a recording, though.  The concertos he did with Pires are better.

Oh, I was certain it's real --- it's only that Boulez conducting Mozart is such a mismatch in my book...

On the other hand, the most beautiful Ravel's PC I've ever heard was Zymerman / Boulez / I can't remember off the toip of my head what orchestra. The second movement was sheer goosebumply (is thios a word?) magic.

Cleveland. And yes, it's goosebumply good.

Bach

Cd 1

Convincing and energetic, a promising acquaintance and a big contrast with the more thoughtful Weinberger who has the advantage of a larger choice of organs. Rubsam draws attention to his compelling play. Definitely a nice addition.

AfaIk he was famous for being rather nervous usually, but that recording is not nervous in the least, on the contrary it's relaxed, laid-back and even playful, with plenty of audible humming and groaning , actually (at times I thought it was Fazil Say playing  :D ) --- a take that doesn't work at all in D960 imho.

On the other hand the Moment Musicaux are heavy-handed, joyless and sound rather mechanical.

That's not at all how I like my Schubert.

Do you have it?

Yes, I'll let you have it when I'm home this weekend.

I think the cheerful way with D960 goes back to Schnabel.

Thank you for asking, I like his quartets but I still feel a novice in modern classical music.I listen now to music wich I couldn't imagine a few years ago.I'm not fond of the American minimalists with a few exceptions.I listened to Boulez,Ligeti,Dutilleux and the recordings of Les percussions de Strasbourg wich was very satisfactory.
I can't absorb it all,so I have to make choices and I feel comfortable to focus on the big names.I have no big appetite in exploring the new music but I feel guilty in a way if I don't.
I'm sure that there are people who exclusively listen to modern music,it is not likely that I will do the same.
The more traditional music falls far more easely in the ear and I think it is also a matter of lazyness to give less attention to modern music.
So far my confession.
Many recordings I have to relisten before I go further with exploring.

Some lovely thoughts here. As someone who does listen to a lot of new music, your honesty shines through.

Apropos your last sentence, this is so important. As Karl said, "absorption is not instantaneous." Though this is true for many types of music, it is especially worth considering for scores written in (basically) an unfamiliar language. Imagine being in an 1824 audience and hearing Beethoven's 9th Symphony for the very first time -- particularly the opening of the last movement, with its aggressive rhythms and adventurous harmonies. I'm sure more than one person in the audience thought, "What the hell is going on?"

Anyway, good for you for at least giving Boulez, Dutilleux and others a go.

Major sonic limitations, but a terrific performance, with a precision and sharpness that makes Szell sound rather benign in comparison.
