You got my point exactly - digital formats are a curse  :'(

Look what happened to recorded music, particular in the non-classical sphere its gone to pot and I blame digital for that.

Any fool can record something and push it out to the masses with little or no involvement from anyone with some form of musical skill...........................

You might blame digital for that. This doesn't mean your blame is well placed (or indeed aligns with the post you're responding to).

CDs are digital but they predate social media platforms like YouTube by decades.

I did not single out YouTube (which I don't have a problem with) just digital music platforms- particularly FLAC,MP3,4 and all the download formats, Apple and the rest- they are the death of music

Repeat: CDs are digital.

And your complaint about how any old person can distribute their dreck is not simply a result of the existence of those formats either. Which is why I made a reference to one of the main platforms that people use to distribute their stuff.

Frankly I'm not entirely convinced you've thought through what you're complaining about, whether it's form or content or low access costs or distribution models. You've just picked one word that conveys "modern" and made it your scapegoat.

I personally have a number of concerns with downloads and streaming, but I wouldn't ever use "digital" as a synonym for them.

Actually, what do you mean by "the death of music"?

Probably just that Ariana Grande isn't as good as Aretha Franklin.

A lot of the vinyl experience has nothing to do with the sound quality. It's the tactile, immersive experience - dusting off the album, watching it spin, adjusting everything just so. It feels ritualistic, something you have to pay attention to.

Enjoying the process of playing a vinyl record for its own sake is an understandable pleasure - it must be comparable to my preference for reading real books instead of those kindle things. But (setting the issue of sound quality aside for the moment), I'm not persuaded that it has much to do with the process of listening to music, or the quality of the listening experience.

QuoteLPs can be art objects. A lot of classic rock albums have iconic cover art, and reducing those covers to CD size or (worse) a little image on your computer screen seems like a mild form of vandalism.

I agree. But the loss of the LP cover art form is quite another matter, which might (theoretically) be solved by retaining the CD format but putting the disc in a bigger package. The digital format itself isn't to blame.

What has this got to do with FLAC or MP3, I wonder.

Not understandable to me; I agree with your second statement though. I prefer real books but kindle has its place.

To be clear - I didn't mean that I shared the pleasure of vinyl rituals myself, but I can understand that some folks might. (In the same way, I can understand how some people enjoy cleaning their cars, or gardening, even though I dislike those activities myself.)

I've think I've heard this my entire adult life, so just wake me up when it's finally dead. :)

That looks great! However, I have nowhere to put it, nothing to play on it and almost certainly can't afford it.

I'm too young to be into Aretha Franklin and too old to be into Ariana Grande.  :P

It's very varied. Ignore the crap and enjoy the good stuff. So much stuff out there. If nothing interests you then maybe it's you and not the music?

That is a great thing. You can express yourself without being Michael Jackson. Nobody is forced to listen to my crappy music in Soundcloud, but at least I can express myself!

If you find this thread ever extends to talking about 'recording media' in reference to the visual image, do let me know (via PM or whatever) and I'll be glad to tell you where it's at.

Arguably I'm the same, but I find that argument doesn't really hold very well given that I listen to music from a few centuries ago.

Never had a reason (interest) to explore their music. I guess Aretha Franklin is HUGE in the US, but in Finland I think hardly anyone cares about her music. Finland listens to white heavy metal. It's idiotic, but what can I do?

You can decide whether the reason is chronology or geography, or that there doesn't have to be a reason.
