The newest incarnation has a fancy book which I can live without and an extra BluRay CD, for which I don't have a player. So this at a slightly cheaper price makes sense for me.

Even if you can't play the blue ray, the new set might be a better master (from original tapes, etc) and sound better on CD. I have the discs you mentioned (in a different box) and they can sound a little thin.

I read the Amazon blurb to imply that the BluRay CD has the new remastering, but that the standard CDs do not.  May be wrong on that.  But given my el-cheapo CD player, the difference would have to be substantial to have a noticeable effect.

Yes, the blurb can be read that way, but with some ambiguity. It would be a really dumb thing for them to do, but I don't put it past them.

(I poked around the DG web site and noticed that in the track listing for this release there are different timings for the blue ray and CD version of the same movement. This seems to suggest that they did, in fact, remaster for blue ray and then toss in the same old CDs from an inferior prior master. Unbelievable!)

Four discs for € 3,99 looks like a good deal to me.

I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Harry - you're right that is excellent value.  Some really interesting works in here.  The Somervell "Thalassa" Symphony for one with its Elegy movement  an "in memoriam" for Captain Scott and his Antarctic team.  The compromise is OK engineering and mainly OK playing - a bit like early-days Naxos discs.  But at this price a no brainer.  One thing to note - there were 5 original discs so not ALL of the music from the Cameo Classics series is retained here.

Yes I noticed the missing disc too, but they stick to their 4 disc bargain boxes. Maybe it will emerge sometime in another box. The compromise here is clearing the recording and performance level, but then as you said the price is a no brainer.

I have these on preorder:

The first 2 volumes have been highly enjoyable.

Hi New Erato - I'm a big George Onslow fan (20+ CDs at the moment), so the Vol. 3 offering above piqued my interest - checking his Composition List, he wrote 34 String Quintets (see first quote below) for those interested - SO, had to see what I already owned - nearly a third w/ just one duplication (second quote) - AND surprisingly, the 4 quintets on the Naxos V. 2 & 3 (own V. 1) are not in my collection - will put on my 'want list' - thanks.  Dave :)

Good occasion for some extra browsing!  :)

Ordered this week:

The Huelgas/Van Nevel is a 2nd attempt, but this time the seller is probably more reliable....

I took advantage of what appeared to be an amazon pricing error and ordered La Jacquerie  by LALO  (completed by COQUARD for $cdn12.94 instead $48. something.    Someone spotted the error and it has been corrected but my copy has been shipped.  With another item, no shipping cost either.

With the current jacquerie in France, this is quite appropriate !  :o

Getting those CDs at that price amounts to grand theft audio.

I found it very cheap, 1 euro and 3 euro shipment and in very good condition. ;)

I won this as the highest bidder at an eBay auction.  Paid £92 for a very good (rarely used) copy! Not bad in my opinion:

Good deal. I got it from what I considered a super sale at Abeille Musique, 154 Euro.
