The new erato

It is a great set if inventive, neoclassical sonatas are your thing.

Sibelius: Complete Symphonies [Abravanel]

This set has been spoken of before and was recommended to me. I have not now purchased it.

Typo corrected. Thank you Karlo.

A great, and embarrassingly cheap, haul at a local used record store.

Nice haul, Greg. The Ravel Dutoit is a classic recording as are those last symphonies from Dvořák with George Szell. That Mahler 3 from Levine is quite good (the best I can remember).

Being the Sibelian I am, I couldn't resist any longer:

I already owned two recordings from this Segerstam series, but I didn't own them all.

The cover reminds me of this one, a favourite disc of swedish music:

Have had this item in my cart for a while, it went down in price by more than a dollar. I took that as a sign... 0:)

I like Callus' playing - couple of little things to note - the RVW Suite is only the 1st book of 3 pieces.  The full 8 movement version (in 3 books) was recorded by Frederick Riddle on Chandos.  Also - not 100% sure of this but pretty certain - rather annoyingly Callus makes a cut in the final movement of the Bowen.....

I used to have the whole VW suite on lp - long gone of course. This favourable review by Rob Barnett was a key factor in my decision:

Yes, indeed - I already have Gould in the piano sonatas and Kashkashian in the viola works.  I see sadly no billing for an althorn player, so that one is probably given to something else, as it generally is.

This is really quite an excellent Scheherazade. Live, and available only via streaming or download.  Got the High Res Flac.  Really huge difference between that and the regular stream release.

I had been considering Schuricht's "Franco-German" Beethoven for quite a while, and some laudatory comments here on GMG—by, among others, André—finally made me pull the trigger. The Bruckner symphonies are a welcome bonus, even if I have the Seventh and the Ninth under the same conductor (broadcasts with NDR—Tahra—and the BRSO—Orfeo—, respectively).

There's very little duplication in this set for me (mainly Padmâvatî), and this seemed a good way to get a wider view of Roussel's output (and get alternate versions of works I like).

Good day, Rafael. Very nice! I, too, own this set, but I haven't even worked my way through it yet. What are some your favorite Roussel works?

Good day to you, John!

Well, my knowledge of Roussel is not that intensive. I really like Padmâvâti, a strange but noble and at times intensely beautiful and touching work. Symphony No. 3 is also a favourite (it was my introduction to the composer decades ago, thanks to Boulez). And then Bacchus et Ariane and Le festin de l'araignée I also enjoy. I wasn't that impressed either by Aeneas or Évocations (the latter I got to know via the Supraphon recording), but should these ambitious works another try. Of the chamber music, only the SQ had a strong impact on me, but it was a really strong one. I don't recall encountering any of his piano music or songs so far. I'm certainly looking forward to this set.

Do you know Padmâvâti? I think it's the type of opera you'd like (you know what I mean  ;) ). This excerpt is for me one of the score's highpoints:

I can't believe there's only two recordings of the work, a studio one under Plasson--included in the Erato box--which is perfectly fine, but has an inadequate lead in Marilyn Horne (great artist as she is), and a live one under Martinon (his only recording of an opera AFAIK).

Ordered last night.

The last is a re-order after Arkivmusic cancelled it even though its system says it was (and is now) in stock.  We shall see what we shall see.  I'm not sure their system is working well.  I received one item, and (according to the US Postal Service) have two more on the way, for which no shipping notice was sent out.

That's a shame, seems pretty clear they will be out of business soon. I rarely ordered from them, but I found their drill-down search system very useful.
