Your Top 5 Favorite Dutilleux Works

Alright, Dutilleux fans, it's time to post your 'Top 5' favorite works from him. I'll probably sit this one out since there's a bit of Dutilleux that I don't know at all (i. e. the solo piano works and chamber music except for his string quartet, Ainsi la nuit), but will be interested in seeing others' lists.

Don't know that much of his music John, although I like:

Symphony 2
Metaboles
Cello Concerto

An extraordinary composer. Haven't heard all of his works, but love these:

Symphony No. 2 - Have been lucky to hear this live, with the Cleveland Orchestra
Métaboles
Ainsi la nuit
Tout un monde lointain - Along with Lutoslawski, one of the great cello concertos of the 20th century
Timbres, espace, mouvement

I first heard Dutilleux' music when EMI issued the Rostropovich disc of Tout un monde lointain (coupled with the Lutoslawski concerto) some 40 years ago. It has been one of my favourite cello concertos ever since. I will hear it in concert for the first time tomorrow with cellist Edgar Moreau and conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. I really look forward to that one.

Other favourite works: the two symphonies, Métaboles, The Shadows of Time.

He only composed a limited number of works, and he is one of the  few composers I could say honestly that I love everyone of his works!

This is actually one thing I admired about him was his ruthless perfectionism, but this usually yields phenomenal results as his music ably demonstrates.
