A frankly very good performance of Verdi's Requiem under Nézet-Séguin. The ladies' names were totally unknown to me but they were both excellent.

Soprano Angela Meade is making quite a name for herself in the bel canto repertoire. Here in Spain she's sung Norma in Madrid and, just a couple of months ago, Aïda in Barcelona, both to great acclaims (I must confess I've never heard her). Mezzo Ekaterina Gubanova was a splendid Brangäne in a performance of the Peter Sellars / Bill Viola staging of Tristan I attended at the Teatro Real some six years ago.

It's occurred to me that orchestral recordings are going to suffer because of this. You need all the players together in a room.

And concerts as well.
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

Thanks for those details. They are indeed superb in the Requiem, with better, purer voices than the men. I'm not surprised that Meade has bel canto works in her repertoire. Her voice is powerful and under excellent control. Bass Bryn Terfel is way past his prime here.

Debussy is always my standby in such perilous times as his music is like a soothing balm for my soul. I'm not going to go with the tag of 'easy listening' because Debussy's music certainly isn't muzak created for mass consumption, but it is music that falls easily on the ears, or rather easily on my ears. Works like Images, Books I & II, Pelléas et Mélisande, the Sonata for Flute, Viola & Harp, Préludes, Books I & II, Suite bergamasque, Études (which always seems to hypnotize me), the song cycles like Ballades de François Villon, Cinq poèmes de Charles Baudelaire, both sets of Fêtes galantes, Chansons de Bilitis, Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé, and orchestral works like Jeux and Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune never fail to transport me to a better place.

By the way, the Met is rebroadcasting a performance from I believe 2005 of Janacek's *K.K. on now with Karita Mattila.  :)
