Quote from: Papy Oli on May 06, 2023, 08:37:51 AMAs seen on twitter, "she's held that sword up longer than Liz Truss has been Prime minister".

;D

Also seen on Twitter a remark that Ms.Truss gave Ms. Mordaunt the office she currently holds as a way of keeping her away from the center attention--which had the direct result of her now having a visibly prominent position in the Coronation, seen by millions.

Also less sympathetic to her, a remark that her outfit made her look like the villian in a speculative-fantasy YA novel.

You can go wherever you want, including abroad, whenever you want. You can read, write and print whatever you want. There is no censorship whatsoever of the mass-media, arts or entertainment. You can pretty much do whatever you want. Where is the totalitarianism? I don't see it. And if the fact that an anti-governmental protest may result in someone being held in custody for a few hours and fined means totalitarianism, then all countries are totalitarian save Russia, China and North Korea for which totalitarianism is too weak a word.

Thanks for the comments by the way (positive, negative and neutral). I enjoyed reading them.

Here are the Red Arrows flying over Buckingham Palace:

Charles and Camilla could not look up at them as their crowns would have fallen off!

Prior to the event my thoughts were following the Queen's Jubilee and funeral this is too much. It did not turn out that way for me anyway. So many moments will long live in the memory, Harry living up to the title of his book looking like a spare part walking into the Abbey, William kissing his father with Charles reaction and the three cheers to his Majesty by the military personal on the lawns of Buckingham Palace which sent shivers down my spine. I enjoyed the music but agree the ALW was awful, belonging on a West End or Broadway stage. My worry, where is Elgar! Relieved when his music was played during the King departing the Abbey. A great historical day of which Charles and Camilla played a blinder.

Seems like the sort of Boadicea-type image that could sow a seed in little Englander minds across the nation and lead to her ending up as PM one day  .. (as if to underline the point I spy Tony, Cherie and Gordon in the background).

How nice to be in England,
Now that England's here,
I stand upright in my wheelbarrow,
And pretend I'm Boadicea.

I think it's fair to assume that Mezzo-Soprano Alice Coote has not been impressed by some elements of the Coronation Concert last night...  ;D

The "opera" bit refers to Andrea Bocelli and Bryn Terfel singing "You'll never walk alone", ironic the day after the Liverpool supporters booed the national anthem at Anfield. Terfel's singing was dreadful and still miles better than Bocelli.

"World's best" refers to the introduction of Lang Lang as The World's Best Pianist...playing a short intro then as an accompanist to Nicole Scherzinger, for guess what...a Disney song (from Mulan). You'd think he has a Disney album to plug.... oh wait...

The Shakespeare bit was 2 actors reciting a Romeo & Juliet sonnet interspersed with some Bernstein music and some choirs, and 2 dancers of the Royal Ballet dancing in the background...

She might have a point...

Didn't watch it (and had no intention of doing so). The bit I saw on the news was what could be expected: the apotheosis of kitsch (did anyone expect otherwise --except apparently for Mrs. Coote  ;D --?).

Sadly most of the non-classical artists were not much better, saving maybe Scherzinger's great voice on an otherwise dire song, Steve Winwood 's rendition of Higher Love and even some of Take That (I know!). The rest (particularly Lionel Richie and Katy Perry...) were atrocious.

On the other hand, the visuals on Windsor Castle and the Drones show were stunning.

Missed the whole thing because West Ham won against Manchester United. ;D

I thought that the Coronation Concert was quite fun actually - really enjoyed it.

Talk of erecting a statue of him outside London Stadium. Single handily (pun) De Gea saved (pun) our season.

I very much agree with this and also found the 'three cheers' on the lawns of Buckingham Palace surprisingly moving. As for criticisms of the concert I wonder what people were expecting at that kind of event. The irony of 'You'll never walk alone' sung by the opera stars was not lost on my either following the 'Let's get rid of the monarchy' posters at Anfield (or words to that effect!) However, they could hardly have performed the last act of Boris Godunov at the Coronation Concert.
PS
All credit to Lionel Richie and Katy Perry (not to mention Miss Piggy and Kermit) for performing, unlike some of our own, home-grown talent like Adele, Spice Girls and Harry Styles who apparently declined their invitations. I can, however, understand why Elton John declined as he was closely associated with Princess Diana.

In advance I had been 'not again, why can't they wait with this till it's William's turn?' the ER2 funeral being that close in time.
However it did work for me. The beautiful uniforms, the horses and of course the proceedings in W Abbey.
I did not watch the entire thing, just did some cherry picking.
One major cherry, obviously, was the lady with the sword. My oh my, talk about being in one's prime in middle age! I love that.

Penny Mordaunt (lady with the sword) was shafted by the press and the power brokers behind the Tory party during the last campaign to replace Johnson. The prolonged attacks by the Daily Mail for example were sickening. After the Coronation her odds of being the next Conservative leader have been slashed by bookies.
