Quote from: San Antone on January 24, 2019, 04:08:53 PMNo studio dates, during that time he was recording for Orrin Keepnews (I think the label was Fantasy) who insisted on using name rhythm sections on all his recordings.  Also, we were playing hard-bop along with his R&B hits (Hard Times) whereas Keepnews wanted him to record more urban "smooth" jazz.  I personally think his records during that period are some of his worst.  Both before and after the Keepnews years his records were better.
Wow, not a very positive review of Keepnews' touch. I've been listening to this 2002 extended interview with the late Riverside Records founder who doesn't sound anything like the producer hack you suggest (?). Or maybe he just likes to talk.  :P

Quote from: AnotherSpin on December 09, 2023, 10:27:54 AMYears ago I used this CD to check the sound quality of my sound set when I was swapping tubes, cables, played with spikes/vibration control, placement of components, and so on.
Interesting. It did get a Grammy for best vocal performance, but like you demonstarte, I find her instrumental arrangements one of the best aspects of her recordings. You can hear that she puts a lot of thought into her ensemble. For years I didn't understand her appeal, but once I relaxed and opened my ears (and heart) a bit she became one of my favorites.

I'd love to hear his response to this (always like hearing San Antone's jazz stories) but I do think that Keepnews likes the sound of his own voice, judging from the branding of a "Keepnews Collection" of reissues with pictures from his birthday party replacing information about the performers...

When I Fall In Love Chris Botti (2004, Columbia)
Spinning this one now. Found it among my mom's (who recently passed) collection. Never took Botti seriously as a horn player (and loathed the whole smooth jazz sound of the 90s/early 00s). But this disc isn't bad; it's certainly relaxing (romantic, I guess), if not particularly memorable. Think it went platinum. Good for Chris.  ;D

Kind of Blue Miles Davis (1959, Columbia) YouTube
Been a while. Still sounds good.

Track 1 is the most interesting imo and the longest of both tracks with McLaughlin on guitar doing a great job.

Duet Doris Day, André Previn (1962, Columbia)
Not as good or varied as my favorite Day album, Day Sings Gus Khan (I'll See You In My Dreams Soundtrack) but it's a nice late night simmer.

That's interesting. I'd been thinking just recently that I wanted to know Days albums better and I don't know that one. I really like Day By Night and would welcome more recommendations.

Enjoying more Previn accompaniment, this time with Ella Fitzgerald and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a live 1979 performance. Boy, this is a beat up VHS transfer but the audio is in remarkably decent shape.

New release from great Yamamoto Tsuyoshi Trio. Perfect for testing the capabilities of your audio set among other things.

Sounds great. Better than 15 years ago to my ears. Groovy, visceral, intense and Potter in great shape.

Sco's first.

Edit: This is actually his fourth album, third studio album. But it's the first one on Spotify.

Scofield started his career with Chet Baker and after that George Duke, but most interesting, Mingus I read on the second last recording of the latter:

There is a documentary made of Scofield, looks very interesting. You can watch the preview:

I'm definitely gonna watch it. Curious about his life and the life of a jazz artist.
