Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on January 11, 2024, 01:07:43 PMSo sorry to hear that the rains are off.  :(  Strange winter here too.  :(  Too much moisture at once.

Too early to panic, but tend to be jittery about it.

I understand (though not living in Cal. I can't understand it fully).  Makes me nervous/uncomfortable when things are "off" in my neck of the woods--and elsewhere.   :(

Quote from: Pohjolas Daughter on January 11, 2024, 09:20:12 AMAre they predicting strong winds again?  Hope not!  Interesting thoughts about the weather--I don't know enough about meteorology to make guesses about it.

Did you at least have fun making a tent in your office?  And reading ghost stories? ;)

PD

Yes, the current forecast is same strength, same wind direction, the whole scenario is pretty much the same. Even some accumulating snow to start with, then changing over to rain, just like Tuesday night. Not looking forward to this at all. And of course I didn't make a tent in my office, I just threw down a Thermarest pad and a sleeping bag. It wasn't very comfortable though, and I got very little sleep that night.

More blizzard conditions today with another possible foot of snow. I was happy with the curious absence of snow and cold temps in December.

Do you have a snowblower?  One thing that I hate is when the snow is already piled up from a previous storm; I'm then trying to lift the new snow even higher to pile it on top of the old snow; hard on the back!  Thankfully, most of it has melted/been washed away with the rain, so that won't be an issue this round here (plus we're supposed to get mostly rain).

I have an electric shovel, which isn't great for the speed and amounts involved so far this year, but if I go out every once in a while, it does the job.

The older gentleman next door allows me use of his snow-thrower if necessary, and I usually clear his pavement with it as well.

You were spot on with your description. Much easier to shovel compared to the other day, harder to lift over what was already there.

Glad to hear yours turned over into rain!

Thanks PD, and no worries. But as you probably know, we're facing exactly the same scenario again tonight. This time I'm staying put until we lose power - and if we don't, I'll count it as a blessing!

How are you doing?  Power?

Fine here (though I haven't checked out the basement yet).  Supposed to clear up later in the day and followed by dropping temps.

And once again, we never lost power. We did, however, see a 20-kt wind gust at 2 meters above ground in a sheltered location, which was probably twice that at treetop level.

Our temps didn't really drop until last night and this morning - currently -12ºC.

Supposedly about 19F this morning so far.  I'm thinking of moving a portable heater down to a certain area of the basement; last winter, I experienced my first (and hopefully last!) burst pipe.  :( That bill smarted [The pipe burst over a weekend.].  I remember that it was windy then too.  The plumber told me that when that happens, the winds drive the cold air basically into any gaps by the foundation.  I wasn't alone re burst pipes that day.

Sorry to hear that! My landlords provide a propane-powered space heater for the lower level where the pipes come into the building. When it drops near or below freezing, I run the space heater for a short time. To know when it's cold enough to use the heater, I have a temperature sensor from my weather station down there. I grew up in Michigan in a house where a burst pipe was always a possibility in winter, so I know how serious that can be. There were a couple of really cold mornings last winter - I remember one on a weekend when it got down to -31ºC out in the boonies (-24ºF).

It will get down to 21 F tonight!  In a few days 18 F.  For South Carolina, that is exceptionally cold.  It is raining now.  If it freezes over, it might be too slick for me to drive in.  I hope not.  I need to have my class setup their display (it is interim and I'm teaching Origami).

Stay safe!  We've had wet snow today, and it's getting mighty cold: tonight's low will be 20°, 18° next night.

Thanks! I haven't been to work for almost a week due to weather. Today was 40-below-zero (F) wind chills. I assume these trends will move to your coast, so stay inside if you can!

For those of you in Europe -40 F is -40 C. >:D

And ouch VS, stay warm!!

Here in northwestern Ohio we are around 0 F to 10, tomorrow will be a near 20.

No above freezing temperatures in the forecast (which is always wrong the farther out in time one goes) until late next week, but who knows?

I enjoy brisk walks in the snow!   ;D

I put in some more insulation and have a space heater nearby (and a couple of other tricks/thoughts up my sleeve, so hopefully, all will be good  ;)  ).  A bit concerned about uber cold moving east...didn't have a lot of time to check into it lately, but I'll dig.  Have you heard anything more about upcoming drastic drops in temps lately?

Wow!  That cold?!  What was the temp outside when you had 40 below wind chills?

And stay safe all!
