How do we count by the way? E.g: Does the DG Bach sacred vocal works with Gardiner count as one or nine?
I love music. Sadly, I'm an audiophile too.

Nine-  it's the only way to be accurate.

I too am skeptical: that figure approaches Harry's number and I just don't believe anyone approaches Harry's number, which at last count was 1,002,458,217, I believe.

I understand Harry's goal is to have more CDs than China has people. With the strict one child policy here, he should catch up shortly before the start of the Beijing Olympics on August 8th, 2008.

My that's nearly three times the population of the United States!

Still, perfectly believeable.

Sorry, Harry, I try to keep up but you're just too fast for me.

The strange thing is that with the thousands ( I will very roughly guess I have maybe 4000 CDs now, and maybe 3000 LPs) of albums, I am actually quite familiar with most of them, though doing the math regarding time, I could not have actually spend all those hours listening. Though I do almost perpetually have music on.

I don't have the heart to rid myself of music anymore since a very regretful album clearance in the early 90s.

I could have sworn I posted here but I see I haven't yet...

I think I have only close to 1000 CDs. I thought I had a lot as storage space is already a problem (workable, usable storage space that is) but I see it's tiny compared to most!  :o

My jazz collection numbers the most as for about a 10 year period that was my chief focus, I was studying it and playing in big band, etc. I say jazz, but it's an equal mix of modern big band, trio/quartet, blues, fusion, soul, funk, jazz singers, Latin jazz. I have approximately 350 jazz,  100 orchestral film music, 200 pop/alternative/country, and 300 classical.  Also for classical about 50 LPs/78s and a few reel-to-reels.

I'm trying to increase my classical exclusively now that I'm on this board a lot, but it's difficult because I'm also a poor college student. For springrite's question, I pool resources with other college friends and we store things digitized, we try to share in our new purchases and get to know if we like something before spending. I have my friends to thank for exposing me to so many new composers and works I might not have tried otherwise. The library is also a nice resource as well, especially any college library with a music dept.

But I noticed since posting here my collection is unfairly weighted toward the symphonic repertoire, mostly with symphonies, showpieces, tone poems, concertos, and chorus + orchestra. Gradually working on this, but I see this trend continuing because there are simply so many great symphonies I haven't heard or am looking for a good recording of. I make no apologies, when there are SO many fine Mahler, Shostakovich, Sibelius recordings out there, well, what can you do? :D

You ain't even heard classical music 'till you've experienced the best that chamber/solo can bring.

Why, a single pianist can hoist the entire emotional spectrum on his/her shoulders and leave a whole orchestra stuck at the starting gate! ;D

So just say no to batons! 0:)

Veit Bach-a baker who found his greatest pleasure in a little cittern which he took with him even into the mill and played while the grinding was going on. In this way he had a chance to have the rhythm drilled into him. And this was the beginning of a musical inclination in his descendants. JS Bach

;D The solo pianist stuff is kind of overwhelming! There's so much and so many fine pianists, where to begin? I do have many Piano Concertos though.

I am working on string quartets, recently I've been listening to Hindemith and Shostakovich SQs and they're wonderful.  :D
