Yes, that's Ralph. He's at least 16 but still enjoys his walks.

Humid is fantastic?

Yes.  When it is cool, it feels much warmer if the air is humid instead of dry.  Also I find that my nasal passages are not so dried up and congested.  Don't get me wrong, on a hot day it sucks.  But this isn't that.

Still unseasonably warm in central VT, 10ºC and I saw 13ºC earlier today in Montpelier. We had some passing showers earlier this afternoon but it seems to be over now. This is VERY unusual weather for February in VT.

Now, though, methinks I hear Punxsutawney Phil snickering at us; I know it's New England, and this is far from crazy, but new snow accumulation of 9 to 13" possible on Tuesday? Oof dah!

You've forgotten what winter is.

Not really, but yes, the winter so far has been so unseasonably mild, that a reversion to normal feels like an imposition. Fact is, too, we do need the snow.

To wit: beautifully mild today 48° and sunny, and the latest forecast is that we get 10 to 14" of snow tomorrow. I guess we live in an age when Mother Nature's mood swings really swing. My larder is stocked.

Quote from: DavidW on February 12, 2024, 09:47:08 AM? Why do you need snow?
I'm thinking mostly of the water table, this season. In a normal winter when the frosts can be sharper, snow cover is also good insulation for organisms in the soil.

Due to increased heating, the jet stream is measurably stronger, and hence more unstable. In the eastern U.S. fluctuations in the path of the jet stream determine whether you are getting warm air swept up from the tropics or cold air swept down from the pole. That's why greater fluctuations are superimposed on a general warming trend.

Further to your point about volatility, now they're saying that the nor'easter will shove off farther south. The Natl Weather Svc now advises me to wxpect 4-8" of snow.

Texas now has the second largest wildfire in U.S. history burning, in winter. California still has the number one spot.

I feel for the people and the animals going through that.

Just read a BBC article stating that 85% of the cattle in Texas also live there.  Hard to read about the harm to them.  I suspect that a number of the cattle (that are still alive) will need to be euthanized.

Fifty years ago tomorrow, the town of Xenia in the state of Ohio suffered greatly from one of the most serious tornado outbreaks in history.

And once again, it's back in the bullseye:
