This album of standards with acoustic band is pretty much jazz.

An interesting aside (or not), but in the mid-00s, I kept a correspondence with guitarist Ben Monder. He's really a nice guy and one of, if not the, finest jazz guitarist of his generation. His harmonic vocabulary is nothing short of amazing.

Without a doubt, Ben Monder is an amazing guitarist. I think there are so many fine performers today: Jakob Bro, Gilad Hekselman, Liberty Ellman, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Miles Okazaki, Julian Lage, John Parricelli, Peter Bernstein, et al.

Tony Malaby's Paloma Recio remarkable album on the no less remarkable Portuguese label Clean Feed.

Of the guitarists you mentioned, Jakob Bro is without a doubt my favorite. His style is kind of like what if Bill Frisell grew up and studied in Denmark instead of the US. His whole less is more playing appeals to me much more than someone who can run the fretboard. He's more concerned with atmosphere and note choice. I also like how he, like Frisell, uses loops as a springboard to generate not only more ideas, but to fill some space. This is especially effective in a trio setting.

I generally like almost all of the guitarists on ECM Records. Starting with John Abercrombie and Terje Rypdal to the more recent ones. No doubt I'm biased, I grew up on ECM vinyls in the 70s-80s.

I love John Abercrombie (and I enjoy some of Rypdal's albums, too). It's a shame about Abercrombie. I wish he could've been with us for a bit longer.

Great choice. I'm huge Miles fan. What is your favorite period of his output?

I'm attracted to different periods for different reasons. Recordings on Prestige, the 60s Quintet on Columbia, a number of 60s-70s electric recordings. Care less about his last, post/hiatus albums.

I'm an Andrew Hill fan, so am enjoying reissues of his 3 (Japanese) East Wind albums.
