Part of the tragedy of the Palestinians is that they have essentially no international support for a good reason: they've no wealth, they've no power, so they've no rights.

Wonderful - we can never have enough recordings of the masterly, epic Piano Quintet! Though the fabulous DG recording featuring the all-star line-up of Repin/Gringolts/Imai/Harrell/Plentev is tough to beat. The Violin Sonata is completely unknown to me.

In a traversal I'm doing through his 9 string quartets thank the Naxos recordings, this CD has been extremely rewarding:

The SQ No. 2 shows him as a composer who handled the form phenomenally well, but it is the SQ No. 4 that steals the show. I don't have the technical words to describe my impressions with more accuracy. What I can say is that this is a major work, masterful in every way, imbued with arresting ideas and a myriad of moods, very personal in style. Quite simply a creation of the utmost sophistication and craftsmanship. In the Russian string quartet realm, this has the honour to be one of the very best in my view.

Thanks for the news!  I will be looking forward to that: do the performers plan on recording all the quartets?

Better than "The Undead at Tesco" which is what I often experience - I've written a suite: 1. "Two Geriatrics Fight Over Getting the Largest Cucumber" (Allegro confrontando); 2. "Whoops, I've Knocked Over a Pile of Spaghetti Hoops and Cleared Off Leaving Someone Else to Clear Up the Mess" (Scherzo confusiando); 3. "I Can't Find the Constipation Tablets" (Largo con molto); 4. "Accosted for Trying to Nick Items Through the Self-Service Checkout" (Allegro doloroso). Soon to be premiered by somebody or other, pending my release on bail...

Now for the first time seeing this, one of the best posts ever written here  ;D

The official webpage doesn't state specifically that, but it shows that is the first volume, so that ensemble should record the remaining quartets.

Thanks. Good news.
I've been revisiting this set, which I purchased just to get the complete quartets:

Committed performances, but there seem to be a lot of intonation problems. I have a smattering of other Taneyev recordings (DG, cpo, Hyperion), and would welcome another complete SQ cycle.

YES, there definitely intonation problems!

At times you will hear microtones rather than the correct notes!

The only other possibility is that a tape recorder with a faulty motor was causing all the microtones: but why did no one catch that something was wrong during playback?

To the bolded text - agreed. The same issues affect their Myaskovsky SQ cycle, which is unfortunately the only game in town for those works. Do seek out the Carpe Diem Quartet's better executed Taneyev SQ cycle on Naxos!

Shame on me for not mentioning their cycle, which is indeed much better!

And they are based here in Ohio!

There is an image of a Naxos recording featuring the Carpe Diem Quartet I posted on this very page of the thread and you skipped it (for not using another word) (on purpose?).

I did not notice it, because I used the ALERTS link, which takes you directly to a comment.

I am happy you like their recordings.

My bad. I haven't spent much time on the board lately, so was not up to date. Skimmed the page, saw "volume 2" and wrongly assumed the cycle was not yet complete; then focused more on the posts re. Razumovsky/Brilliant.

Also, thanks to all for comments on intonation of the "Taneyev String Quartet" ensemble. I try to avoid them unless there's no other game in town, but have still held off on the Myaskovsky. It could be a matter of faulty recording, but the end result is frequently IMO not totally satisfactory.

ChamberNut

For those who might be interested in a great set, although, I think for this amalgamation, it is only available for streaming/downloading.  However, you can still buy the individual Carpe Diem String Quartet discs.
