Quote from: Irons on July 08, 2024, 08:16:41 AMWeather atrocious in Blighty. Cold and wet with only the odd fleeting sighting of the sun. So dispiriting watching all hard work planting crops proving to be a waste of time. When I moan, which I do regularly, the wife says think of the farmers! She has a point. Global warming? Tell me about it!

My daughter has returned from Memphis. Although very hot at 35c,the main problem for her group being air conditioning of buildings. Not a great deal of air conditioning in UK so we are not used to it. She has returned suffering from pretty bad inflammation of sinuses.

Tell me about it!  I'm sensitive enough that I need to use these expensive air filters that block out allergens. I also use a light touch on the AC (25 C), and even then I still suffer from congestion.

Yeah, I've been seeing a lot of rain in London (Wimbledon).  Not surprised that it's been the same in your area.  I do feel for you as lots of (not necessarily in terms of inches in your area) and not much sun can cause all kinds of problems--various fungal diseases, slugs, etc.

Not certain what you mean about "inflammation of sinuses"?  Is that the same thing as a sinus infection?  Alas, I often get those after flying somewhere.  I then end up having to visit a medical clinic and have to get some antibiotics.   :(   A/C does dry out things though...perhaps she needed to have drank more water to stay hydrated?  In any event, hope that she feels better soon.  Did she enjoy her trip overall?

PD

p.s.  *Hot and muggy here (which I hate), so my a/c has been on quite often; not looking forward to my next electrical bill!.
*In the 90's.

p.p.s.  With global warming, you might want to rethink things.  Perhaps purchase an a/c for one or two rooms?

So the eye of hurricane Beryl just passed over, that was interesting. Not so much the 3 tornadoes within 10 miles. About 3.5" rain so far. All in all a super summer day.  :blank:

Yes, let us add to carbon emissions to hasten things along!

Well, you should shoot at it... it is the Texan way after all!

Anyway, stay safe.

Well, I try and not to use mine all of the time, but I also need to sleep at night!  If you have any added thoughts as to how to deal with heat and humidity, I'd be happy to hear them....seriously!  :)

Ceiling fans save the day! But check out the forecast where Irons lives, he does not need AC.  Maybe the heat! lol

I remember reading about a number of heatwaves hitting Europe over the past years.  A dehumidifier would help (if he doesn't have one).  I have plaster walls and ceilings and low ceilings in my (old) house, so I don't think that would work.  I do know that ceiling fans can be very helpful (in both terms of heating and cooling).

A/Cs have also been created to be more energy efficient.

Hope you got through with minimal damage. Stay safe!

No rain here at the moment. Temperature varies widely over the region but is generally in the low 30s C (~90ºF). Unfortunately I still do not have A/C so it is a bit miserable - the dew point is in the upper teens though, instead of the mid-20s like recently, so that helps. Have not checked inventories lately; reminder to self.

Well that was fun, in a 'not' sort of way. No major damage, but definitely a few adrenaline inducing moments. Hope no one here is downstream of that storm...

How well are you able to sleep at night with the humidity?  :(

Good to hear that you're o.k.  Others, bad news (heard/read about the Grenadines, Jamaica, etc.).   :'(

Not terribly well, that's for sure. More incentive to look seriously again for an A/C unit!

We had a drought here for a few weeks, but it has finally broken.  And there was a leak in my kitchen.  Had it patched though (hole in the roof).  Despite the sprinklers, my grass desperately needs the rain so bring it on!
