JBS

Gunther Schuller: Symphony for Brass and Percussion*
J.J. Johnson: Poem for Brass**
John Lewis: Three Little Feelings**
Jimmy Giuffre: Pharoah**

Brass Ensemble of the Jazz and Classical Music Society
*conducted by Dmitri Mitropolous
**conducted by Gunther Schuller

Soloists: Miles Davis, flugelhorn and trumpet
J.J.Johnson: trombone
Joe Wilder: trumpet
Recorded June 14, 1956

This is one of the CDs in Sony Mitropolous Complete Recordings set. The track listings and liner note are not clear, but I think Davis, Johnson, and Wilder participated only in the three shorter pieces. At any rate, the Symphony seems much less jazz oriented.

This is sooooo good!

First listen to this:

I had never heard of Wilbur Harden, but purchased this for Tommy Flanagan, whom I saw live in New York (at the Village Vanguard IIRC) in the 80s.

Well, this take on The King and I is turning out to b3 very good...  :)

It came in one of those cheap "4 LP albums on 2 CDs" compilations (thank God for them!)

Watching live from Carnegie Hall, their expert youth ensemble, NYO Jazz, with Sean Jones conducting and on trumpet. If you like big band jazz, heartily recommended.

That box is pure gold, one of my very favorites.

Dipping into the latest album from Janis Siegel and pianist Yaron Gershovsky, The Colors of My Life, with songs by Cy Coleman. Siegel was legendary in The Manhattan Transfer, but equally superb on her own.

Here she navigates the treacherous interval leaps of a classic, "The Best Is Yet to Come," with the ease of a master.

Revisiting this treasure trove, The Complete Jazz at the Philharmonic on Verve 1944 - 1949, with CD 4:

The roster includes Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Young, Charlie Ventura, Charlie Parker, Meade "Lux" Lewis, Coleman Hawkins...  :o

The opening The Man I Love, recorded in LA in 1946, with Mel Powell, Gillespie, Young, Ventura, Bill Hadnott, Willie Smith, and Lee Young, is something that has to be heard to be believed...  :)

Tommy Flanagan is a great pianist! I haven't been to his live.

From Janis Siegel, "A Thousand Beautiful Things," the title track from her album of the same title. One of my favorite vocalists.

A fine album that would probably had more love if had been released under Cannonball's name.

Dusko Goykovic was a favourite of Willis Conover, host of the Voice of America's Jazz Hour in the 70s or 80s. I remember he used to put his records often.

Haven't heard this, but own many Parker (as leader) recordings and am a fan of all 3 principals.

This one is rather unusual.
