Quote from: AnotherSpin on August 26, 2024, 10:34:18 PMI was listening to those albums on LPs only, and the sound was fabulous. I suppose his equipment back in 70s was all in order. It's known that Yes considered Vangelis as a candidate for the keyboardist role after Rick Wakeman left, but doubts arose due to the size and complexity of his equipment, which posed logistical challenges during long tours, and concerns that Vangelis might draw too much attention from the audience.

I think the difference is more in the recording/mixing/mastering side.

Could be. As I mentioned before, I listened to these albums in the '70s, and back then, I was hardly inclined to analyze the technical aspects of the recordings. With the passage of time, all I remember is the stunningly fresh impression of the incredible richness of previously unheard sonic palettes. It was unlike anything else I heard then.

69 Love Songs

Literally an album of 69 love songs, but perhaps not love songs as the term traditionally suggests.
I got it out as I'm seeing them do about half of it live at the Barbican this Saturday. Stephin Merritt their principal singer and songwriter, is really a wordsmith in a class of his own, witty, caustic and impossible to ignore, and catchy, ironic tunes just seem to bubble out of his pen endlessly.

Edited: listening again slightly revised my memory ..

Dry Brett Kavanaugh

Yuridia & Ángela Aguilar - Qué Agonía.

Crystal-clear, moving songs.
'The 'I' is not prior to the 'we'.' (Jean-Luc Nancy)

'... the cultivation of a longing for the absolute born of a desire for one another as different.' (Luce Irigaray)

Vangelis - Beaubourg 1978

Vangelis playing with ring modulator.  :D This gave me Autechre vibes in many places.

Lenny Welch: "Since I Fell for You" — A beautiful change from the Streisand version, which I love.

Mel Torme and George Shearing: "Since I Fell for You," live from the 1989 Newport Jazz Festival, and makes me think I haven't heard enough Mel Torme.

And one more, from Natalie Cole and Reba McIntire, also spectacular in a completely different way.

Easy to listen to. Calm music for the most part. Melancholic/bittersweet mood.

Vangelis - See You Later (1980)

Compared to other albums by Vangelis I have listened to so far, this one felt incoherent, a compilation of leftover ideas/recordings.

It's fun to revisit these 30 years old CDs. I hate the World as it is today, so "living in the past" listening to old music is cool.  8)
