And a "Happy trails to you"  :) ....

PD

;D Not as much as my classical purchases from years past. I think there was a point where I was having at least 10-20 classical CDs arrive at home every other week.

Quote from: JBS on September 17, 2024, 05:57:09 PMNot at all. My purchases have gone down quite a bit, especially in the last year. This week's purchases are the first batch that's not mostly new releases in quite a while. And I'm giving myself time to give these CDs at least a couple of listens before I put them away--and relisten to sets I haven't played in a while.
And I'm nowhere near Harry's level of needing offsite storage. Of course, he mostly streams now. I'm not, at least not yet.

Hmmm...somehow I still don't believe you. ;) And you say @Harry is mostly into streaming now?!?!? This is certainly a new development I wasn't aware of!

You sound like me and fountain pen collecting in 2020.  :o

My fellow long-time GMGers know how obsessive my CD buying was in the past. It was getting so bad that I went to a psychiatrist and he prescribed some 'calming' pills. ;D

Well my never listened to pile consists mostly of several Wagner boxes I've never gotten myself to start with, and the set of Callas's studio recordings--a number of which I had as individual issues. Beyond that I'm about a third of the way through the Warner New RVW Collector's Edition--which is almost totally the same as the old version but with better packaging. I donated my copy of the old version to the local library.
Everything else I've listened to at some point. Which is why I try to to re-listen to at least some of it!

Oh, this is interesting...I had the RVW New Collector's Edition, but actually gifted to someone after acquiring the older set, which I actually liked more since it says EMI on it. Now that is a true 'collector's item'. ;) I've still got to go through Solti's Wagner Ring cycle as I had acquired what I suppose could only be called a super deluxe edition of it. It's one of the most magnificent presented box sets in my entire collection. I need to get on the ball and listen to it, but, as you and everyone else knows, it takes forever to go through a Wagner box set. Anyway, perhaps when I'm a vacation I can get around to it.

I like saying "Vilduh Frawnguh" in my head when I see her name.  ;D

I don't even know if that's the right way to pronounce, but I enjoy it anyway.

She's an amazing violinist. I own several of her other recordings and continues to impress me.

I must have, but that's quite alright as I'm sure most of the CDs he's given away have a great home now. Are you one of those lucky recipients?

Not me, he had issues shipping to the land without music.

I'm not searching for things to purchase at the moment although have been sucked into the Presto download store closeout and have bought a few of the half price Naxos releases.

Let's just say recent discussion of these recordings had something to do with ordering them.

The Hallgrimsson is quite a find!
Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

"When Time hath gnawed our bones to dust, yet friendship's echo shall not rust"

Traditionally, the statement "this is my last purchase for the [year]/[month]" would be made 4 or 5 times before the actual period ended.
Every single post on the forum is unnecessary. Including the ones that are interesting or useful.

I read great things of the Elgar - some review said something like "the best recording of the work in 40 years".....

But - I was very underwhelmed by the Dvorak set.  I really had high hopes and of course it is well played because its the Czech PO - BUT no better played that a hundred other international orchestras these days and with nothing much to add in terms of character or interpretation.  However - I also saw a review of this which praised it to the heavens so what do I know!  Hope you enjoy all your purchases.

Thanks @Roasted Swan. I've read good things about this Vilde Frang recording of the Elgar VC as well. As for the Dvořák Bychkov set on Pentatone, well, it must be said that I'm quite a fan of Bychkov's conducting, especially since he has taken over the reigns of the Czech Philharmonic. In recent years, I've been hugely impressed with his Mahler, F. Schmidt, Strauss and Smetana (one of the best Má vlast recordings I've heard in ages). So I'm definitely looking forward to his Dvořák even if like the other composers I mentioned there's some stiff competition.

Hopefully, this will be my last order of the year:
