Sorry to hear about Ohtani and his translator.  A bit confused as at first I thought that the translator was allegedly stealing from the team (to pay off his gambling debts?), but then I found an article online that he was accused of stealing from Otani?

Anyone know the latest and hopefully also the truth?

I am sure that the investigation by MLB must be to make sure that Ohtani himself was not involved in gambling (especially on baseball). I am pretty sure he would be cleared.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

Latest from The Times. Not that I'm giving the guy a pass but the life of a baseball interpreter can't be a terribly intriguing one. Seems like a great gig for a student but tough for a grown person unless one had a fulfilling alternate career.

Thanks.  I did find a CBS article today.

Been watching more games outside of my market (Philly) due to Prime Video's daily free stream of a MLB Game of the Day. Sometimes they're two if a West Coast club is a marquee matchup (tonight the Angels host the Yanks). I thought about a MLB sub on Prime but the free games fit bill until the playoffs. Plus, it's been fun listening to play-by-play and commentary from announcers round the country.

Anybody watching the Phillies-Mets series at London Stadium this weekend? It's on Fox today and ESPN tomorrow. Odd vibe so far...

Yes! Agree on the odd vibe. The visual of such a big stadium - with no fans visible behind home plate - is removed from the pastoral feel of my favorite TV ballparks. And the TV announcers trying to remember the names of British tourist attractions were embarrassing.

Loved seeing Lindor's custom glove and Harper's custom bat.

I just learned that players are paid $10K per in-play conversation. I don't like em. Distracting as hell. KiKe Hernandez made a needless error with a routine but off-target throw to first base talking to the announcers last night in the Bronx. You could see he was pissed. Ignored their questions for the remainder of the inning.

Edit: Apparently his quote about the mic'd session yesterday was "We get paid. I like money."  :D

Anyone tuning in to MLB's Free Game of the Day?

Aside from my local team matchups I've been setting aside time for the MLB daily pick, which is also available on Prime Video, btw. At $30 a month the subscription is far too much, especially with the local team blackout restrictions. Plus, it gives me a chance to experience other national ballparks, crowds and their local announcers. But the MLB streaming package is a bad business model from every perspective. I'd pay $100 for a good seat to a live marquee matchup way before I'd plunk down money for their streaming service. Does anyone here subscribe?

Seattle righthander, Bryan Woo's early exit in yesterday's game vs. Tampa Bay due to a hamstring pull is the latest loss in a seeming domino effect around MLB with pitchers. It seems rare for a pitcher to go uninjured for an entire season anymore. Found an interesting article on what the pitchers themselves think of the ongoing issue.

My annual sports viewing typically consists of one half of the Super Bowl.  However, the last couple days I've seen the stats Shohei Ohtani has put up this year.  When I first saw the numbers from his 50/50 game, I thought the graphics team had made a mistake.  6 for 6, 3 HRs, and 10 RBIs, as well as becoming the first and only 50/50 guy?  (Now 54/57.)  Dan Patrick gushed for like a half hour on his podcast - something I've never watched before - and pointed out that Ohtani's highlight stats from that one game have never been achieved by any other player in an entire career.  That's just bonkers.

I may watch some of this year's World Series.  Maybe Shotime goes 60/60.

Loud and rowdy crowd in Milwaukee tonight! The last week of baseball has had some wild twists and turns.

My best decision of the summer was leaving work early to go home and watch what turned out to be Ohtani's 50/50 game (and 51/51...). It was so much fun. It was like watching a guy play a video game - simply no problems doing anything. Only a single? No problem, steal bases. His last homer was a few inches above the strike zone. He just couldn't do wrong.

As a runner, he's not one of the fastest guys - he's just so big and so smart with his technique that he can overcome the lack of a top gear.

I am horrible regarding sports stats (best in tennis), but even I have heard of him and how good that he is.  ;D  Nice to learn more about him and his career.  :)

Absolutely epic game tonight!

We have three regional rivalries in the next round -

Phillies vs. Mets
Dodgers vs. Padres
Tigers vs. Guardians

and, uhh, Yankees vs. Kansas City  ;D

Neither team from last year's Series even made the playoffs, eh?

I am annoyed that the mlb never made a World Series 2023 video (Unless it's come out in the last month or two?). Normally, get's released within about 6 weeks of the series ending.

Remaining teams and the last year they won it all
Dodgers - 2020
Royals - 2015
Yankees - 2009
Phillies - 2008
Mets - 1986
Tigers - 1984
Guardians - 1948
Padres - never (existed since 1969)

Correct! Arizona was eliminated the very last day. Texas was doomed from the beginning because they had so many injured pitchers and their plan was "hope they survive until everyone heals."

Rought for the DBacks!

Re Rangers:  I grew up in Dallas, mostly back in the old Arlington Stadium days. Except for the 1996 playoffs, they were never remotely good back then. But we loved them.

Brian

I got here in 2012 so we must have never overlapped! The old stadium was charming but my friends and I have gotten some oddly-shaped sunburns sitting in those old bleachers. Have only been to the new place twice - once for a game, and once for a construction hard hat tour before it ever opened.

Haven't heard from you in a while.  Miss hearing from you.  Hope that all is well?
