Quote from: ultralinear on October 16, 2024, 05:35:35 AMYes, I am not the fan of Delman's Bruckner that I know you are, but I've read enough encouraging things about his Mahler to give it a try. ;)

Here's an Amazon client's comment about that B9 (in a cheapo 10-cd 'great conductors' set:

« Cd 7 is a wild card. It is a digital recording made in 1994 with Vladimir Delman conducting an Italian regional orchestra in Emilia Romagna in Bruckner's 9th symphony. Delman was a Russian who left Russia in the 1970's to conduct regional orchestras in Italy. He died not long after this live performance was recorded. This is a truly GREAT recording and no Bruckner fan should be without it. It is well worth the price of the entire set«

And I swear I'm NOT that Amazon client ! 😆

Amazon USA, which already postponed the Oistrakh box delivery date from Oct. 18 to Nov. 1, has now removed delivery dates entirely and instead says they will update me when they have one.  ::)  ::)

EDIT: Looks like the website now says Nov. 15.

I went into a charity shop this morning hoping to find a cheap CD but came away having spent £50 on a 30x75 spotting scope and tripod with which I hope to see the Moon ::) .

I know nothing about scopes, but I hope that it works well for you!

It did! The (full) Moon was very bright and clear but what really surprised me was that the optics were sharp enough to see the four large moons of Jupiter 8) .

Nice! I have those Mozart recordings (plus the Requiem and a couple of violin concerti) in the 39 CD "Bruno Walter - The Edition" that was released by Sony some 10 years ago in a box that resembles that of LP set. Great stuff!

I've just ordered some Elliott Carter that's missing in my collection:

Finally found a copy of the second (of two, both long OOP) CDs of Ravel's complete(-ish) piano music as played by the great Claude Helffer.

I hadn't heard of him before now, but looked him up on Wiki.  When did he do these recordings? And do you recall how you discovered his recordings?

According to Discogs, Helffer recorded his traversal of Ravel's music in 1970.

His is a name I remember "since ever", so to speak. I must first have become acquainted with him be through his recordings of the Boulez sonatas on Harmonia Mundi (from 1980, although there's an earlier recording of the Deuxième sonate on DG from 1970, only transferred to CD in Japan AFAIK).

He was a very "intellectual" pianist, focusing mostly on 20th century music, and he was befriended with many of the composers who emerged after WW2.

His recording of Albéniz's Iberia is almost impossible to find, but is among the very best I've ever heard. Alas, much of his recorded legacy has either never made it to CD (e.g., a pioneering recording of the Schoenberg Piano Concerto, under René Leibowitz) or has been reissued in limited pressings.

I noticed on Wiki that he had a number of works from contemporaries (like Xenakis) dedicated to him (most of the other names I am unfamiliar with).  Who released his recordings on LP?

Much if it on labels that later became part of what we now know as Naïve. Also Harmonia Mundi and a couple of DG releases, and then much on rather obscure French labels such as Guilde Internationale du Disque, Club du Discophile Français, etc. Rather scattered around, I'm afraid.  :(

A great work by the way.

This is a thread I do not post on often anymore. Due to the law of diminishing returns and the arrival of the availability of streaming, I do not buy much music on disc anymore and I cannot be bothered by purchasing downloads.

Yet visiting Japan provided a great opportunity to get some used disc in pristine condition at the equivalent of €3,50 - €5,-. I visited the two Disk Union branches in Tokyo that specialise in Classical Music - selling both new and a large selection of used discs - and got the list below. But there was much more. .. The realisation that I had to somehow stuff every item purchased in the same suitcase I came with, forced me to leave some great boxsets on the shelves. Do I regret not grabbing a mint copy of O'Dette's complete Dowland? Probably... ::)
But quite happy with this haul.
