Quote from: LKB on January 25, 2025, 05:31:31 AMWe should, and you should see that one ( it's a marvelous film, and generates some great online reactions ).

The movie the quote above is referencing is It's a Wonderful Life. I do not agree with the sentiment (and I find reaction videos weird), but it was the prompt for this thread.

The most glaring movie I've not seen, I believe, is Forest Gump, and I'll never watch that.

Bookwise, far too many to name, as I am somewhat of an ultcrit, but the most surprising to many would be that I've not read any of James Baldwin's fiction - won't either.

Musicwise, of the pop sort, I've only heard one Taylor Swift song, and while I did like it, I never felt compelled to explore beyond that.

The whole song? Wow. I've never managed more than 10 or 15 seconds — tried a few times with different songs.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, and still could probably sing most of it. It was very catchy.

You've had better luck than I have.

GOs for me, in film:

The Matrix series.

The John Wick series.

The Mission Impossible series.

Everything by Bergman, Fellini, and François Truffaut.

I'll probably hit literature next.

Over the past few months, I've watched quite a few of Truffaut's films, some for the first time. Honestly, I'm really impressed. Right now, I find Truffaut more interesting than both Bergman and Fellini, even though I've been familiar with their work for much longer.

The John Wick series.
I'd recommend only the first in each. If you had to choose only one of the two, go with Jn Wick.

Non-classical music: I have my favorites, but they are usually older ones or pop. But music is way broader and deeper, and thanks to streaming I find that many of my students have critical and eclectic tastes that suggest that I'm missing out.

Classic Literature: I like to read for escapism, so I only challenge myself to read a classic once or twice a year.

Movies: none. I went through a long phase where I watched lots of films from many countries and many genres. I hardly like or comment on the thread but I've watched nearly everything posted.

TV shows: too many great shows out there. And a TV show is a big time commitment.

Video games: Baldur's Gate 3. I say love Western RPGs, but I haven't played this critically acclaimed game of the year made with passion. I keep waiting for a deep sale that is never coming because the game is too popular for that.

Fine Art: never studied it or looked too deeply excepting a few favorites.

Other: quantum field theory. It is widely considered an essential class for theoretical physicists which is odd since while it is fundamental to high-energy physics, it is only needed in parts of condensed matter physics and not at all in astrophysics. My research area was classical gravity, so when the teacher sucked I dropped the class to focus on research. Now many years later, I'm trying to learn it when I have the time. And I would consider this as one of my two true glaring omissions.

Travel: and that is the other big one. I have either travel aversion or agoraphobia and I don't travel (though most of you know that I do get out to attend concerts and visit my family). I have a few places that I think I will push myself to go see.

Taylor Swift's music sounds like the most calculated pop ever to me. There's nothing interesting nor annoying about it. Nothing. Maybe that's why masses love her music so much? The masses don't know what they want, so her empty sonic manifestation of meaningless nothingness (that is too well executed to annoy people) serves them well?

Why brag about that? I don't mind her songs. It is competently produced pop music. The songs (at least the ones I have heard) just do nothing to me. I simply choose to listen to something more interesting.

Maybe you need more pop music in general into your music diet so that you can listen to whole 3 minute songs without losing you mind?  ;)

Thanks for the recommendation! I've been listening to pop music my whole life—less now than 20 or 40 years ago, but still. Maybe that's why I can spot something fake in just a few seconds ;)

I haven't seen any John Wick movies either. Not interested. To me Matrix movies are overhyped. Should I worship an entire movie because of bullet time effect? I have seen just some movies by Bergman and Fellini. I have seen more Truffaut movies (about 10), but even he is a hit and miss to me.

She definitely has captured the zeitgeist, but I don't know if I would frame it so negatively, as I am very disconnected from the current pop scene. The last time I paid real attention to pop was back around 2000 or so.

I don't have a radio, and I don't own a car.

Pretty much the music I listen to breaks down into four genres:

1. "World" music.
2. Electronic
3. "Classical"
4. Bandcamp

For example, the fact that such a product does nothing to the listener ;)

I've seen all of these, and, of course, I'd say none are necessary, but if you are interested I have listed my favorites below:

The Matrix 1 (although the highway chase from 2 is easily the best part of that series).
John Wick 4 (because of Yen, all the rest of the films are the same to me).
Mission Impossible 1 or 6 (1 is cyberpunkish, and 6 has Cavill).
Bergman: Cries and Whispers (one of the scariest films I've ever seen - still strikes terror in me).
Fellini: La Dolce Vita (Anita Ekberg, enough said).
Truffaut: The 400 Blows (still one of the greatest endings ever filmed).

I am also somewhat disconnected nowadays. One reason is because pop music has become background music for TikTok videos and this makes the music less interesting to me. For me pop music peaked around 2010-12. I adore pop music of that era!

Yeah, I go to Bandcamp, and I just browse around until I find things I like. 8)
