Quote from: nico1616 on February 06, 2025, 08:02:30 AMStill in rock music there are rare boxes that will never reappear, Bowie's Station to Station super deluxe box, Neil Young's Archives boxes etc... I am sure these are great investments, but personally I do not see my collection as an investment, it is just for my pleasure.

Actually the Neil Young Archives I box WAS recently reissued, and is widely available right now (but only the CD version, while the Blu-ray version, which I own, has not been reissued and probably never will).

Quote from: Kalevala on February 06, 2025, 08:33:14 AMJohn, I'm going to hold you to this one!   ;D  Though I just noticed a caveat(?)..now what does "pretty much" mean?  Obfuscation might be a better word to use.

Hehe...well, I'm not ruling out the possibility that my parents might be getting me something for my birthday or Christmas. If they do indeed ask me what I would like as a present, I'll kindly point them to Koopman's box set of Bach's cantatas. ;D I know I already own the Suzuki, but I'd like to have another one for prosperity. ;)

Great, Rafael ! This set is a treasure trove of exciting performances of unfairly neglected music.

Live from Carnegie Hall, a 1960 performance with Maureen Forrester and Richard Lewis (same soloists as in the Reiner recording on RCA).

Been after this for a long time and found it relatively inexpensively from Japan - it includes the very moving 3rd Symphony:
"Courage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm" (Churchill).

'The test of a work of art is, in the end, our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good' (Stanley Kubrick).

Every time I see the name of this composer I chuckle: moroi in Romanian means ghost or werewolf.  :D

Excellent - reminds me of one of my favourite CDs!

Quote from: Madiel on January 26, 2025, 11:44:25 PMA few hours later... oh what the heck, I might as well get most of the Mozart I'm likely to ever want.

The copy of the main box available on eBay is in Australia and to my mind very reasonably priced. Which enabled me to justify spending a bit more than I normally would on a single disc for the other one, we must have completeness.

I spent about 30 seconds re-sampling on iTunes before going "oh that's right, these sound fantastic don't they". And Vegh includes the marches that open or close some of the serenades.

The Posthorn has turned up in today's mail, completing the set.

People always gave the impression that this wasn't in the Capriccio series because Vegh had "already" done it for Philips, but in fact he recorded it halfway through recording the Capriccio series. Bang in the middle.

Which seems really strange.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

Some sort of exclusive contract with Philips? Or a one-off for Philips which Capriccio didn't want to compete with (any sign it was recorded at a music festival or some special event?)

It just says it was recorded in Salzburg (which as much as many of the Capriccio volumes say, though some specify the particular location or weren't in Salzburg).

Different recording crew, and to my ears a slightly different sound. But really, it almost feels like Philips swooped in after the first couple of volumes were released and said "hi there, we really like what we're hearing, do you want to do one for us for better money?"

I did a quick count. It seems I have about 75 Rossini recordings.  :D
