Op 159a Snootful of Hooch | Music by Karl Henning | Listen on audio.com

I should have mentioned earlier: the "snootful" in the title, plus the sonic nature of the vibraphone/flute version, later made me remember a short work by another masterful musical miniaturist, Liadov and his work A Musical Snuffbox!   ;D

Quote from: Karl Henning on February 16, 2025, 02:05:25 PMThanks! I have a pdf of the original score, so I'm creating a fresh Sibelius file from that (I'm now 81 measures in, roughly a quarter of the piece done.)  Good practice, too, if the engraving job comes through.
It's official: my services are engaged, But before I get started on that: Going to Symphony tonight (Haydn & Stravinsky) and I have Dan's piece to arrange first.

This would have been the early 1990's. I'm smugly upstaging interior painting by the artists in my life, in the First Congregational Church in Woburn.

Well I tore myself away from doomy punk and French progressive death metal to listen to Hooch and liked it! 8) The vibraphone version had a nice interplay between the instruments but I think the flute version's better. With my limited knowledge it reminded me a bit of Stravinsky. Is the audio rendered by software? It sounds rather too realistic but maybe the flutes sound just a little too smooth? I'm more used to mellotrons ;D .

I just went on Facebook to join a local astronomy group I discovered but am having trouble with friend requests - it keeps saying I don't know people (apart from those so paranoid all I can send them is a little cartoon thing)  :'( .

Karl, you are an incredibly gifted composer and, as I wrote to you in the 'Missing Members' thread, I've been enjoying many of your works via your SoundCloud page. What I find fascinating about your sound-world is you never think the piece is going where you think it is going to go. An element of surprise, but gleeful surprise, is always lurking around the corner in your works even if the music has a darker undercurrent.

I hope when the Boston classical scene of the past 30 years gets under the historic microscope, someone at Albany Records or Naxos comes across your music and is able to bring it to a larger audience. Imagine it now: Henningsmusik, Vol. 1 and so forth. 8)

That comment is mine as well: it is how I distinguish great from lesser composers.  If I can continually deduce the direction of the music, I tend to become bored.

Yes, indeed: Karl's music always has a surprise of some sort!
