Quote from: ritter on April 30, 2025, 10:06:01 AMDrove past the Juan March Foundation on my Vespa this afternoon, and popped in to get the third instalment of their live recordings of Conrado del Campo's string quartets: the Quatuor Diotima playing SQs 8 & 9 (on two CDs).

I noticed that my previous order at jpc was over a year ago!

Times have definitely changed.... ::)

So... that jpc order arrived yesterday, and it felt like Christmas!  :laugh:

It seems that I cannot rationalise the satisfaction of getting and owning the physical product out of my system...  :P
At present my approach to collecting is to get rid of stuff I do not need, in combination with streaming and limited buying of selected recordings on disc.
Even though I am aware that in the long run to will result into a physical collection that will (slowly) keep growing...

You just have to realize that you own far too much already. Like, for example, are there still CDs in your collection that you haven't heard or any that are still in their cellophane wrappers? These are good indicators that it's time to stop. When I stopped, which was in late March, it felt like a weight had been lifted off of me. Also, I'm saving a lot of money as well. One of the bonuses of buying CDs for so long is running across recordings you forgot you owned. This happens to me quite often when I'm trying to find something specific. I'll think "Oh, I forgot I bought this album." or "I haven't heard this recording in a decade. Glad I bought it."

Anyway, it is a gradual process, but you are your own boss and don't let your supposed "wants" or "needs" for something that you just don't need any longer dictate your actions.

This 5 CD set of all of Stravinsky's solo piano music (including recently rediscovered transcriptions of, e.g., Pulcinella and Le Baiser de la fée), played by Alexey Zuev,  was discussed here in GMG when it was released a couple of years ago, but somehow it slipped from my mind.

A very good choice. I was thinking of dumping all my CD's with you, since you've got the hunger back again for the real thing! ;D  ;D  ;D
I've always had great respect for Paddington because he is amusingly English and a eccentric bear He is a great British institution and emits great wisdom with every growl. Of course I have Paddington at home, he is a member of the family, sure he is from the moment he was born. We have adopted him.

Albinoni

I am a supporter of the HIP performance practice. It has been quite some time that I have distanced myself in some cases because of the performances that often seem to suffer from anemia. Also hectic and aggressive at the expense of letting the music breathe. Fortunately there are exceptions to this practice such as Frans Brüggen in particular where not all singing is banished with the idea of bringing something new.
I must admit that I have always looked down on Claudio Scimone with a certain condescension.
I recently searched for a piece by Albinoni ( Sonata) and found it on CD but this was a newer recording with I Musici. I found the older recording on the label "Alto" and was delighted to have found it.
This older recording is so much more beautiful, slower and full of melancholic singing strings.
So I finally end up with Claudio Scimone where I find much that has been banished in the HIP church. Music is more than just applying recipes and fads.
You can find beautiful results in both camps, HIP or less stylized versions.
