Usually, Wikipedia is a bit pants, but this isn't bad...

Haha. The Frozen Chosen - a somewhat pejorative term for those who believe themselves to be the only 'real deal' in town, and who often end up being a little self-congratulatory and insular.

A bit unkind of me, probably.

😁

Edit: Our guys would hit me with sticks for being so pokey 😄 ... their roots were Open Brethren, but now they are far broader - our current leadership are mostly Baptistic and Calvinistic, so much more open to the mainstream. Some still look at me a bit funny at times still, but I'm used to that 😅

Ah, differences these days; wonder what Saul/Paul would have to say about that?  ;)  Edit:  those thinking that they are "the real deal" bit I meant.

Went outside for a few minutes.  The sun was actually shining and I felt warmth!  It lasted about two minutes, but nevertheless, I'm still happy!  ;D

Despite me, miracles still happen....

Ah, the rain has arrived in buckets here. I envy your shiny yellow thing!

This weekend has a Public Holiday attached in the UK on Monday, so predictably the sun has emigrated elsewhere 😑

Enjoy the warmth!

I suspect that you're getting what we had [Sorry!].  Hope that the shiny yellow thing comes back soon.

Yes, Monday is also a holiday here too--lots of places/services closed but not all.  Sunday and/or Monday I need to get my tuchus back out into the garden and back to clearing/planting.  No rest for the wicked.  :)

Do you garden at all?

Probably not as capably as you. Roses and tulips are my loves. My wife is far more able and has a greater grasp of what goes where, and with what. She really does have green thumbs.

Roses, however... we are leaving behind a huge Mme Alfred Carrière climber that must run to 25ft now, with scores of fragrant white blooms. I will be sad to leave it! That, and a yellow Graham Thomas that is slightly smaller. Pride and joy.

We get the chance to start again where we are going, I guess 🙂. All an adventure.

Your garden efforts are doubtless more varied than mine 😃

I found a picture of Mme. Alfred Carrière...beautiful!  Believe it or not, I've planted Graham Thomas before (a David Austin rose).  Not certain whether or not it's still alive as the peony in front of it has grown quite large.  I have several other of his roses....they are quite lovely.

Quote from: foxandpeng on May 24, 2025, 09:18:48 AMHa. I'm actually a teaching elder in a church whose roots are Brethren, so I probably won't mention that to anyone 😅

Brethren churches in the UK have broadly evolved into more healthy, mainstream evangelical positions with the eclipse of the Dispensational, end-times-obsessed quasi-Zionism that was part of their warp and woof. Either that, or they've shrunk to irrelevance and become part of the Frozen Chosen. Thankfully, we are the former, and are a growing and increasingly impactful congregation of all ages.

Great if such things warm your heart and float your boat. We live in interesting days, with something of a quiet 'spiritual turn' going on in the UK.

Probably not something Crowley would have voted for 😄

Hmm, if it works well for you Crowley might have said you had found your "True Will" 8) .

True Will in Thelema refers to an individual's unique, divinely ordained purpose or path in life. It is the core principle that guides a person's actions and decisions, transcending personal desires and ego-driven motives. According to Crowley, True Will is the expression of one's deepest and most authentic self, aligned with the universal order.

Distinguishing True Will from ego-driven desires is crucial in Thelemic practice. While personal desires often stem from temporary emotions, societal conditioning, or superficial goals, True Will represents a higher calling that aligns with the cosmic order and one's inherent nature. Pursuing ego-driven desires can lead to conflict, dissatisfaction, and disharmony, whereas following one's True Will brings about a sense of fulfillment, purpose, and alignment with the greater good.

I've come across Aleister Crowley's name on numerous occasions — more often than not in a rather unfavourable light — though I don't believe I've ever actually read anything by the man himself. Might you be able to recommend a brief introductory text from him? Ideally, something not too abstruse in style.

LOL, it's all abstruse, he seems to have been very focused on discovering meanings and connections in all sorts of things. I've found interesting ideas in his Thoth Tarot deck at times but the larger system with all the occult knowledge and classical education is beyond me. He also appears to have been deliberately misleading at times and something of a malicious joker. His life was no model that I'd want to follow :o .

Great spiritual leaders lived lives that few would care to follow: Sri Ramana Maharshi donned nothing but a modest scrap of cloth around his loins, and Jesus willingly submitted to being nailed with rough nails to a wooden post. What example does this set for all of us?

I have only just now got rid of the Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on my door LOL. No more meanings for the moment please 😉.

I'm tired of astrophyicists coming to my door begging me to believe in cosmic inflation. Why do I have to believe what they believe?
