Got it, so the "problem" would come being the violinist.

Well, yes, but also that both violinist and pianist are too closely mic'd.

Baldini is the concerto soloist on a couple of recent Naxos Music of Brazil discs playing Mignone and Santos - very well indeed I thought.  So I suspect its the engineering that is responsible for any ungratifying string sounds here!

Yes, as I pointed out, both violinist/pianist are too closely mic'd. There isn't any space in the recording and, for me, this why I just can't listen to that recording of the V-L sonatas for example.

More Mignone means more marvelous music. It should be released on August or September.

Yeah, it looks like it should be on a Ligeti album cover.

Very Intersting. The Fantasia Brasileira IV was premiered as a ballet (choreographed by George Balanchine)  when Lincoln Kirstein's Ballet Caravan was touring South America in (IIRC) 1942.

The YT channel of the Academia Brasileira de Musica has plenty more to offer.

I thought very highly of this work by Gabriela Ortiz.  Vibrant, exotic, energetic music.

I will listen quickly. I got to see a live performance of a short work of hers, Antrópolis, featuring a very prominent timpani part that borders on soloist. It was thrilling and a ton of fun. The timpanist "powered" the orchestra by dictating the rhythms throughout. The conductor, Marin Alsop, learned it for the concert and loved it so much she has added it to her traveling repertoire.

It'll be available either in November or December:

I wonder when the first three symphonies will be released as his early stuff seems to be the most interesting one. The later symphonies have left me rather lukewarm.

To the bolded text - same here, although it's no secret that I generally prefer the earlier works of most 20th century composers. ;) That said, I do very much enjoy Santoro's acerbic yet compelling 9th Symphony, aided in no small part by the compelling advocacy of John Neschling and his São Paulo band on BIS.

I'll have to give them a new listen to appreciate them better I suppose.

What an enjoyable fresh release. A great synthesis between Brazilian folk elements and late-Romantic European aesthetics for the most part. All of these five works for piano and orchestra (including Burlesca e Toccata) display a wide range of captivating melodies, rhythms and sonorities that fetch the ear with ease. Honestly, I can't get enough of those features. It's music that lifts the spirits. For instance, the unabashedly lovely main tune from the Fantasia Brasileira No. 4 (my favorite of the Fantasias) (it appears played by the woodwinds at 1:45 mark and then it's taken by the strings at 2:12 mark) is to die for, that is a really memorable melody, one that conveys a sense of warmth and nostalgic. The Burlesca e Toccata is the most piquant, unpredictable, modern-sounding work of the disc. The Burlesca part is rather somber and mysterious, whereas the Toccata one feels more animated, quirky and folksy (another memorable folk tune appears at 10:20 mark). A very cool work that exudes personality, probably the best piece of the disc, but the whole content of this magnificent brand new recording has no waste whatsoever. One of my favorite releases of this year.
