Really sad to hear that.  Well, it's making a statement to the PTB; however, I expect that it's falling on deaf ears.  I hope that it can hang in there.

One can read WashPost articles if one adds archive.is/ to the beginning of an article's URL; this also works for some other publications, such as Forbes... or so I'm told.

For example, if one wanted to read, say, this WashPost article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/advice/2025/07/04/miss-manners-constant-uninvited-guests/

Add archive.is/ before https://

archive.is/https://www.washingtonpost.com/advice/2025/07/04/miss-manners-constant-uninvited-guests/

I mean, maybe this'll work, but you didn't hear it from me.

They are just toying with progressives now.  Just doing things they know make progressives angry for their own pleasure.

Another article about naming the Kennedy Center Opera House after Melanie Trump:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/republicans-want-to-rename-the-kennedy-center-opera-house-after-melania-trump/ar-AA1J6tkw?ocid=BingNewsVerp

It appears that a Republican Congressman from Idaho is behind this.

The renaming still needs to be approved by the House of Representative and the Senate.

ICE rounding up grandmothers and sending them off to a gulag pisses me off.  This just makes me chuckle.

Frankly, I do not object to the choices.

Question to moderators: is US politics now kosher?  This thread indicates that it is.

Try doing your own research.  "GMG will tolerate religious and political discussion, with the following conditions: All discussion of religion and politics shall be confined to the Diner section."

Since US politics is evidently once again kosher, it is worth noting this story in the Gray Lady from May (a lifetime ago in modern politics) regarding this very narrow topic: Head of Trump's Kennedy Center Calls for Inquiry Into Its Finances

Of course, while I know it will not happen for political reasons, the proper policy here would be to cut all funding for the Kennedy Center, a la the CPB, and to sell the facility off.  It can then be renamed whatever.  Maybe the Andreesen Center for Big Ideas, or some such.

If the actual moderators could provide some functional clarity as to what type of discourse is allowed on US politics, that would be helpful.

Given how things evolved in the past, US politics remains off-bounds on GMG. OTOH, discussing a performing arts institution and its artistic policies is acceptable. If this thread is used as a springboard to discuss US politics in general, it will be immediately locked.

Also, demeaning or derogatory posts aimed at other members have been (and will continue to be) deleted by the moderation without explanation or further warning..

Excellent, thank you for the clarification.  Sticking with the most august, important, and culturally relevant Kennedy Center, and in particular the crucial Kennedy Center Honors, I thought it would be useful to look at the last decade of recipients:

2016 - Mavis Staples, The Eagles, Al Pacino, Martha Argerich, James Taylor
2017 - LL Cool J, Lionel Richie, Gloria Estefan, Norman Lear, Carmen de Lavallade
2018 - Cher, Reba McEntire, Wayne Shorter, Philip Glass, Hamilton (the Broadway show)
2019 - Sesame Street, Linda Ronstadt, Sally Field, Earth, Wind & Fire, MTT
2020 - Garth Brooks, Joan Baez, Debbie Allen, Dick van Dyke, Midori
2021 - Bette Midler, Justino Diaz, Joni Mitchell, Berry Gordy, Lorne Michaels
2022 - George Clooney, Amy Grant, Gladys Knight, U2, Tania León
2023 - Queen Latifah, Billy Crystal, Barry Gibb, Renee Fleming, Dionne Warwick
2024 - Bonnie Raitt, Grateful Dead, Arturo Sandoval, Francis Ford Coppola, Apollo Theatre Foundation
2025 - George Strait, Sylvester Stallone, Michael Crawford, Kiss, Gloria Gaynor

That's quite the dog's breakfast of recipients.  Alas, I checked the calendar for this year, and I will be predisposed when this year's gala is televised.  Somewhat surprisingly, I have been predisposed every year to date.  That's a shame, because celebrities deserve more honors and awards.

Now, when will Metallica get the honor?  They performed when MTT got his award (?), and the Library of Congress added Master of Puppets to the National Recording Registry in 2016, so clearly the Bay Area rockers should receive their state sponsored recognition.
