This is only the 2nd oratorium of Caldara I have a recording of. The other one is Maddalena Ai Piedi Di Cristo, which René Jacobs recorded and is one of the best Baroque vocal recordings I know.

Maddalena is one of the most beautiful and finely crafted works of its time. I didn't expect it to be so rewarding.

Gioseffo seems like a good idea. It's a story of multiple fortune reversals, with treason, huge rise to fame and influence followed by fall from grace and imprisonment, sexual harassment, paranormal disposition, cunning, multiple moments of reckoning - easily the most hollywoodian story in the whole Bible. It's been made into countless plays, operas, even Broadway musicals (Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

I'm sorely tempted.

I'm sorely tempted.

First listen was quite nice, I did not really pay attention to the story, that is for my next listen. The orchestra is top and the biggest vocal part is for the title role, with some impressively long arias. The rest of the cast has less to do, with some even appearing in only one act and they keep me wanting to hear more. I had never heard of any of the singers, but there must be a wealth of young Italian baroque singers available cause there was no weak link. I like this whole project a lot.

I put off getting this for as long as I could, but finally broke down and ordered it...

Curious enough to part with a $1 for this; McGegan, soon after it was recorded came out with his own more complete version but - according to reviews, used only four singers in the chorus, whereas Kraemer employed six. Funny and fickle are the fates - Rule, Britannia (lyrics by James Thomson also famed for his Seasons - but not to be confused with James 'City of Dreadful Night' Thomson) can hardly have gained more celebrity and yet it's from such an otherwise neglected masque/opera/oratorio! One-hit-wonders populate the classical genre as well.

For the Concerto for Violin, Viola and Wind Instruments. I already have the earlier recording of Skalkottas 'Violin Concerto on this same label (BIS), and TBH doubt that this new critical edition will impact my appreciation of the work in any way.


This was in the cut-out bin. Most of the programme is early(ish) Florent Schmitt, with only one short piece from after 1920.

If my memory is correct, I have that CD and was more impressed by the double concerto than the violin concerto.
