Curious enough to part with a $1 for this; McGegan, soon after it was recorded came out with his own more complete version but - according to reviews, used only four singers in the chorus, whereas Kraemer employed six. Funny and fickle are the fates - Rule, Britannia (lyrics by James Thomson also famed for his Seasons - but not to be confused with James 'City of Dreadful Night' Thomson) can hardly have gained more celebrity and yet it's from such an otherwise neglected masque/opera/oratorio! One-hit-wonders populate the classical genre as well. 

Isn't this the opera that is best remembered (maybe ONLY remembered) for that one particular tune???

Right you are! that's the one. It serves as a quasi-official song of the British Navy and still gets a lot of traction, but its colonialist symbolism now hangs heavy upon it.

Hey JBS - would be interested in your comments (or those of others) on the release above - own two sets of these works on 'modern' instruments - the couple of reviews seen have been quite positive - expensive for the 'physical' discs but cheat as a DL - Dave

I will report when I get it. It was "despatched" by Presto Tuesday, so presumably it's now wafting its way over the Atlantic.

I listened to excerpts of this recording last spring on French radio while driving. I was very favourably impressed. I looked for the physical product, but never found it. Will try to get a copy.

It is and it made me hesitant to buy. Ultimately I paid 43 euros because of amazon prime days, which is still a lot for 1 CD but the booklet is one of the most lavish I have ever seen, although in French only ...

I think that series is based on the premise of how a Parisian audience of that era would have heard, if the work (such as Ghosts of Versailles or Senna Festigiamente) has no direct connection to the French court.
