Well, I just decided to properly tally the damage thus far to my wallet including all the shipping costs... a trip to pick some of them up might have been cost-effective.

If you spread it out over 25 years like I should have, instead of less than 3 months, it's quite reasonable.  :o  And it does illustrate just how much of a premium I've paid on some of them because I didn't purchase when they were in print. The maximum so far is about 4 times what it would have originally cost me.

65 volumes in the house.
3 on the way (one of which will arrive Monday for sure).
1 new one that's easy to pick up.
5 old ones that are going to be tricky.
Nobody has to apologise for using their brain.

After a delicious lunch in Madrid's city centre (which is just some blocks away from my home, anyway), we popped into the leading department store in Spain El Corte Inglés) and, in their ever-dwindling classical CD section, bought these:

My first Medtner CD!!

I've enjoyed the music of Casadesus I know so far, so exploring more of it was natural...

Both physical, complete, near mint - pennies on the dollar. 8)

Scarlatti: Pieter-Jan Belder
Scarlatti: Scott Ross

I think, moving forward, that I will not be buying any classical music - digitally, unless, of course, that is the only state in which it was released.

Oh, boy!  :o Did you figure in the cost of the new shelving?

And if some of the ones that you want are in Bali, send me and I'll pick them up for you.  ;D

But seriously, send me a PM and I'll keep an eye out for you for the "tricky" ones and let you know if I happen to run across listings for them (or see them in a store).

Quote from: Que on November 08, 2025, 11:52:53 AMThe complete set? Nice catch! :)

Well, at least if the seller was honest, lol - it was very cheap, so if it is only the discs, let us say - even that would be a steal, lol. :)

Two nice sets - IMO the best of the available sets.

I prefer Belder. Scott Rush is often rather fast and straightforward.

Shelving is to some extent a "clean up the other mess" problem, though there's already a vague notion I want another bookshelf once the "junk" bedroom is sorted. At present, the 40 I have listened to are stacked in a cupboard. The 25 I haven't listened to are stacked on the dining table.

Bali is a fairly unlikely location, but also postage from Bali would probably be pretty cheap!

I am taking a chance that someone correctly understands a website's grading system and that this second-hand copy has the cardboard slipcase like it should.

If it turns out it doesn't have the slipcase, I'll have to decide what to do about the impact on the future aesthetic of my complete collection.

Success! The cardboard case is intact! The dream is still alive!

And the gamble saved me about A$50 compared to the next copy, which had a cardboard case in worse condition.

Momox/Medimops has turned out to be a site worth using. The shipping takes a fair while with no tracking, so it's a little disconcerting, but everything has come through and the prices have been quite decent. Possibly I could have saved a bit on other single CDs if I'd been a little more willing to use them, but the big plus was some opera sets.

Just wondering as a last resort if it's possible to print your own cases?

Well the construction would be the trickier thing than the printing, in that the cardboard cases really look the same as what's in the jewel cases...

I probably should have not cared in the first place, lol. It was just nice early on when I had quite a few where I could get them with the cardboard. Really it's the opera sets where you notice the difference, the big book is nicely housed next to the jewel case holding the discs.

And now that I've come this far, I'd like to stick with the cardboard cases if possible. Possibly I'll relent for Bassoon Concertos volume 4 if I can't find an intact copy for less than 250 Euros from a seller I consider an untrustworthy charlatan... but we're not there yet.

An odd "headline" title for this disc.  OK the Shrecker Overture is to an opera  that could be termed decadent/sleazy but its the shortest piece on the disc.  After that its Korngold's youthfully exuberant Sinfonietta and Krenek's jolly Potpourri neither of which are in the slightest bit decadent - but hey why spoil a good teasing headline by sticking to facts.....

Daverz

Yeah, I thought the same thing.  Where's the sleaze I was promised?
