Yes, nicely done!  I suppose the program had information about the composers: after the first work by the conductor, there were no spoken introductions.

I have no information there, yet. In a text exchange after the concert, Glenn wrote that he would send the program today.  Don't know yet if that means the one-pager, the recording, or both.

Great work, Karl! Off the top of my head I can't think of any other work with this instrumentation. The composite sound is unique and blends really well.

Well, on one hand I am exulting in all the luxurious Family Time. On t'other, Maria has been receiving a course of image-guided radiation treatment for skin cancer. Ideally, she ought to have relaxed as much as possible, but she has had to take work-related calls all this while, and they've been very stressful for her. Her last treatment will be next week (though she comes back to Massachusetts for a follow-up in February.) At the start, it all seemed very promising. At present, while there has certainly been progress, it has not been so much as hoped. Anyway, Maria has agreed to take some weeks to decompress properly, and the ladies will stay through to Christmas. So, to recapitulate, while I wish the circumstances were much better, I am basking in all the Family Time.

Boston Symphony's Dvořák night balances power, poignancy, and playful genius

This was a fascinating experience. My reflex might have been to compare it with Branagh's, but that were unfair in any number of ways. Olivier was a superb artist of another time, in the first place, and such a film made for release during the War would be a powerful tool for morale (a nuanced form of propaganda, if you will.) Even as Shakespeare is England's gift to the world, such a film must be a potent example of what the fight was for. Thus, I take the decision to start the film as a kind of "this is how it might have played at the Globe in the playwright/actor's day, complete with spontaneous reactions from the "groundlings" as itself part of the film's mission. I find, therefore, questions of "which version might I prefer" utterly beside the point. The Salic Law scene is played as broad comedy, and (obviously) perfectly suitably. Before I watch with the commentary, I think I shall watch the RSC production.

Well, I'm on bed rest trying to shake a cold. Under these circs, Henry might be rather a chore. Maybe something lighter.

I am so very sorry that she and you (and family and friends) are having to deal with this.  I haven't heard of this treatment before.  I do hope that it's not very far advanced and that they can cure it (Pardon if I missed an earlier posting).

Many thanks! The Dr and Maria are feeling better about things as of the final treatment. The follow-up is mid-January as we wait for the present dosage to continue its work.

On Sunday (Sunday, if you please) my publisher received 30 days' notice, (legally he's due 60) to leave where he's living. One despairs of the race.
