Welcome to Rattle's world  ;D  That's my problem with many Rattle performances...they just don't feel right. They're just...odd. Now, I like odd (Maazel's Mahler, Sinopoli's...Klemperer's Seventh!)...but Rattle just puts me off the music.

Sarge

I have heard that many times. I do not know how this guy stays in business. I have been Rattle-free for a long time. I fainted, then swore, when he got the BPO.

I have been waiting for Berliners to say, "Time's up, Rattle, get out of town!"  When the hell is that day coming? >:(

Brian

Looks like I might have another day coming up of listening exclusively to the key of D minor.

DOHNANYI | Violin Concerto No 1 in D minor
Michael Ludwig, violin
Royal Scottish National Orchestra, JoAnn Falletta

J.Z. Herrenberg

Myaskovsky, Sinfonietta #1 in B minor op.32.2 for string orchestra (Chamber Orchestra Kremlin/Rachlevsky (Claves))

A simply beautiful work, to which I return very often.
Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything. -- Plato

Probably the thing stopping that time from coming is tasteless people like me who enjoy his work! ;D

Rattle is no Karajan, nor Abbado, certainly not Barenboim: Rattle is Rattle. And for that alone, he has my respect. Also, he is - to my ears at least - an outstanding musician. Perhaps not in the spirit of roaring fortissimi, but outstanding nonetheless; subtle. :)

Well, just received a BIG order from Caiman (Amazon Marketplace) - most are recommendations made in various threads here plus a few extras -  ;D

Tonight for our dinner music, another Dvorak Cello Concerto w/ Fournier & George Szell w/ the Berliners; plus, same cellist in the Bloch Schelomo & the Bruch Kol Nidrei - a nice bargain CD from the '60s - CLICK on the image for some comments, if interested -  :)

Ooh, yes! One of my favorite recordings of anything, ever  8) 8)

Okay Sarge... maybe I should pay more attention...

MN Dave

Drasko was right. This is a keeper.

Well, a MIDI of some new music for a wedding.  (And my wife and mom-in-law approve.)

Earthlight

Messiaen, Quartet for the End of Time, Edward Brunner and Trio Fontenay. Can't really comment on performances; I've acquired a few different ones over the years, but I have to listen to this music sparingly, it's so intense, and this recording—the first I heard—is the one I tend to gravitate to. Sometimes imprinting takes effect real fast.

toledobass

Szell and CleveO in Mendelssohn 4.  (And I approve.)

I like these works--of course. But this is my only recording. Maybe I'll pick up the Perlman. I hear that's good.

Brian

Pleasant enough performances. Would be helped if the piano had been recorded a little more felicitously...

I haven't seen the Perlman recommended here often, at least I would advise against it - no match for Milstein at all.

Don't think there is much competition to Milstein in non-HIP, though I prefer his earlier recording on EMI. If you'd want another non-HIP, you might like Grumiaux.
But next to the Milstein a HIP recording would seem to me the best idea. Sigiswald Kuijken (DHM, 1st rec.) is my favourite there.

Kullervo

Beethoven - Rasumovsky quartet No. 2 (Alban Berg Quartet)

Good night!

Exactly what Que said. Dave may have my Perlman set if he wants, but I can not recommend it.

Best in the catalogue.

I feel the same way. Too erratic for my taste, with absurd tempo changes here and there and arbitrary spotlighting of some inner voices from time to time to compensate for want of personal insight into the work. After a few early disappointments, I've learned to actively avoid his recordings (there are still several of them that have managed to creep into my collection over the years; dirt cheap ones for the most part and none of them all too horrible, the earlier the better though). The only recording of his that I truly like is Grainger's The Warriors.

I think it would be kinder for everyone if he were sacked from the BPO. Let the man pursue his artistic vision with another orchestra, perhaps lacking in recording opportunities...

Requiem the first thing in the morning?    :o
HIP for all and all for HIP! Harpsichord for Bach, fortepiano for Beethoven and pianoforte for Brahms!
