I'd forgotten the cuts were that drastic. I just checked the times and you're right: 155 minutes for the CDs, 100 for the film. Definitely not a first choice then. Still, for some of us, the presence of Ms. Hrubyová makes up for the missing music  ;D

Sarge

This video is a movie using music of the music rather than the opera itself. It works especially well for relatively newcomers to opera because it is more compact and the story moves.

Thanks, Sarge--forgot about this film, which is also excellent.  I would add to anyone considering it: just be mindful that it has substantial cuts in the score.  IIRC the film is about an hour shorter than the complete opera.

Yes, I'd agree with that...much like a film version of a long novel: for the sake of pacing, not everything can be included.

Harry, I bought the DVD five or six years ago. It might be OOP now. If I see it anywhere, I'll let you know. I originally saw it on German television....a ZDF/Arte production.

Well it is OOP, for the prices are astronomical high, everywhere.
But if you see it somewhere please let me know, a Weigle film is almost always interesting.

Marvin, even more graphic (full-frontal nudity) is this filmed version:

Actors instead of singers are employed, lip-synching to the Rostropovich recording you've ordered. They do a credible job of it. Markéta Hrubeyová and Michal Dlouhy are far more attractive than any actual singer who's recorded the roles. I like the realism too...looks like Russia. Although it's slightly abridged [edit: Bruce reminded me that it is in fact substantially cut] it makes an interesting alternative to a staged version.

A few vidcaps:

You sure know how to sweeten the pot Sarge.  I'll see if I can get my hands on that recording for a decent price!!

Yup, this is the DVD with a hot, hot, hot, hot redhead as Lady Macbeth.  Did I mention she is smokin' hot?

But, still, I didn't make it through this when I rented it from Netflix.  The lip synching thing just doesn't work for me, I'd rather just listen to the CDs.  I almost always prefer watching live staged operas on DVD, even with the compromises in picture and sound that often entails.

Also, I see this one popping up in my Amazon recommendations:

The new erato

#6813

A nice, occasionally very good cello concerto, more obviously romantic than I find his symphonies. My 3rd playing of it since I bought it 3 months ago, and it makes a stronger impression now than the first time. Clean playing and good sound.

The Brahms arrangement is superfluous though.

EDIT:OOPS: wrong thread!

The new erato

Yeah I tried "curbing" my purchases many times  ::)...you know you start by telling yourself this will be the last one I promise  0:) and then you find yourself in the Great Recordings and Reviews section of GMG, you don't exactly how you got there ??? but there you are. Suddenly a few hours later you're adding recordings to your amazon.co.uk shopping basket and clicking the proceed to checkout button on the upper right hand corner of your screen and promising yourself that this indeed will be the last purchase.....the next day the cycle repeats itself  $:)....sounds familiar??  I promised myself I would stop purchasing when my collection reached 500 CDs.  I have exceeded that long ago and only recently I discovered the music of Shostakovich what am I  to do about my promise  ???  ::)  ;D!!

One thing I don't like about opera DVDs are the closeups of the singers. Operatic singing does not make a pretty sight ;D  Lip-synching has the advantage of faces not showing such strain and contortions. It's almost as though they are speaking the lines, not singing them, and it works very well for me.

And yes, this Lady MacBeth is hot  8)

I chose Szell because, well, it's Szell. ;D And most of the works are within my tastes. I'm not familiar with Delius' works, and had not even heard of Auber before. As for Busch, it was mainly for the repertoire. I had not heard of him before. I didn't notice till I got home that all were mono recordings from an era gone by, but when you get CDs for less than $5 a pair, does it really matter? ;D
