KeepingScore.org is a website produced by Michael Tilson-Thomas, the San Francisco Symphony and PBS.

At the moment, they have 3 in-depth music explorations, Beethoven's Symphony No.3, Aaron Copland and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

They let you follow excerpts of the score, while watching the orchestra play the music. There are other options like highlighting the main theme, seeing key changes and annotations.

Highly recommended for beginners and not-so-beginners.

Pretty cool, but I think someone posted this awhile back Admin.

That's ok.  It's good to be reminded.  I didn't know there was aweb site.  Thanks!

It's very good, yes.

I've noticed that people in here give MTT flak for showing his face all over all the time, but I wonder if Lenny was any "better".
I love music. Sadly I'm an audiophile too.

Just came upon the, "Keeping Score" series by accident last night.  I was listening to music, while my wife Korey was channel surfing, and came upon PBS.  She says to me:  "Ray, you've got to watch this, it's on Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring"

And so we both ended up watching the whole thing, it was very interesting indeed.  Excellent program.  I would love to see the one on Beethoven's Eroica.  :)

I hope there will be more of these created in the future.

Thoroughly recommended. ;D
Hats off to the SFSO and Tilson Thomas for one of the most creative and informative CM websites out there.

The series is on DVD and can be purchased through Amazon and other similar sites.

I  saw   the   part  of  the  program about   the  Tchaikovsky  4th  on  PBS  and  it  was  excellent. Thanks.  I'll  have  to   check  out  the  website.
Are  you  really  a  horn  teacher,  and  where  do  you  teach?  Are  you  currently  in  an  orchestra?  I  used to  be  a  horn  player,  but  had   to  stop  because  of  a  physical  disbaility.

It sounds interesting. As a listener, it's worth to learn more how to appreciate music.
I will purchase DVD. Thanks for your information.

Another huge thumbs-up for this series.  I've seen two: the Copland and The Rite of Spring , and they could not be more engrossing.  Beautifully filmed, in all sorts of locales including San Francisco's Davies Hall, the musicians' homes, MTT's studio, and outside in parks, on the street, etc.  Especially in this series, MTT reminds me of Bernstein more than anyone else, showing a real desire to communicate and clarify.

I was completely enthralled with The Rite of Spring program when it was on PBS.  And, so was my wife, who is not into classical music.  She loved the show!  I cannot highly recommend the show enough, and I should try and buy that entire DVD set.

For those "Keeping Score"  ;D, after watching the Beethoven Eroica video, I went to their website and...........!

Three new ones are coming up on PBS in October!

Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique - October 15
Ives - Holidays Symphonie - October 22
Shostakovich - Symphony No. 5 - October 29

Keeping Score

I've only seen two so far, but they have both been incredibly great (Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and LVB's Eroica Symphony)

I know there are others out there who love this series, and I'm thrilled to bits that they've decided to do more.  YAY!  :)

Opus106

Thanks for the update, Ray. I haven't been keeping score. :(

Ok, I watched this last night, and I was a bit disappointed.  Still a very entertaining program, but it just didn't have the same in depth musical analysis I was hoping for, similar to the 'The Rite of Spring' and 'Eroica Symphony' programs.

This one was a little on the hokey side, and weighed a little too heavy on the historical context, and Berlioz' infatuation rather than the 'nuts & bolts' of the music itself, which I found the other two programs had a lot more.
