The incentive for this order was Saraste's Sibelius cycle; his Kullervo is very fine and among my favourite renditions.

Blimey, did you win the lottery Tasos.
Many beautiful recordings, especially the d'Indy, Marx, and Suk!

This twofer is excellent, containing a very fine rendition of Bartok 2nd PC.

That would be nice, but no luck so far (I'd have to start buying lottery tickets for starters). Samples of the Marx recording in particular are enthralling. This part of his output shows manifest differences from the world of e.g. his Romantisches Klavierkonzert.

I know and I hope the Prokofiev is just as good. However, the main reason I'm getting this is for the Tchaikovsky Second (shallow me:-).

New Kavakos release, nice. That goes straight to shopping basket, although I'd much preffer if he'd hired conductor for Mendelssohn concerto. Conducting concerto from fiddle never looks too assuring to me.

Listening to the whole of the Marx cd will confirm that impression :)

Anyone follow the Midem Awards?

Here's a straight list of the nominations for the 2009 Midem Awards, probably the most meaningful classical music awards there are, since they are neither gimmicky (Grammy) nor bought by advertising money (Gramophone, Klassik Echo et al.).

I think better choice would be to get Harold as coupling for La Damnation de Faust on DG, and overtures (one more actually) in Markevitch's DG box 'Un veritable artiste'.

Unless this is different set of Overtures, Archipel claiming 1957 as recording date while it's '58 on DG.

And neither offers Egmont which is inexplicably dropped for CD release.

Thanks for the heads-up, Drasko! Since I already have the "vĂ©ritable artiste" Markevitch boxset, I'll drop this in favour of the DG Damnation. I wasn't aware that Harold was included in that one. Thanks again!  8)

as your close buddy used to say, you chose wisely

I owe you a thank you for bringing this very special pianist to my attention. I probably wouldn't have heard of him had you not brought him up here and that would have been a shame. So, thanks!

My pleasure. That's why we post here, to share our interests and learn new things. Hopefully arguments between us don't get in the way in the future.

I'm not sure what Gekic is up to these days aside from teaching in Florida and touring in Japan. I was told that his recital includin Chopin's Preludes was recorded, though who knows if it'll ever get released. That disc you bought is an early one but still very interesting, hope you like it.

If you haven't heard Natan Brand (Palexa) yet, he might interest you.

I can certainly handle disagreements regarding music, as long as people treat me with respect.

I listened to the heroic polonaise last night to sample it and if he can get me to enjoy that hackneyed work, he's doing something right. I have no doubt that I will enjoy it though. His Liszt is even more special to me, as he brings out the poetic side of the composer without sacrificing anything on the virtuosic side of things. I don't know how many pianists I can say are capable of that today.

That was another one that you recommended that I bought and enjoyed, though I haven't heard it in awhile.

I remember one of the first disagreements we had--which precipitated the whole plunge--was over Hofmann's 1936 Moonlight sonata, the first movement with the extremely supple rubato. Have you ever relistened to it? (it's still the best one, I put it on YT)  0:)

He's one the same level as Gekic IMO, and I'm pretty sure the latter could never give a performance of Kreisleriana like Brand does.

My favorite rendition, and the one that turned me on to the piece.

Having secured some parental funding - yes, youths these days! - I made what will probably be the last big order for a while, after my recent concentrated buying "push" (a few of the results of which I've posted, others not).

Hopefully I will now be able to turn my attention to listening full-time, as far as time for music is concerned. :)
