I'm curious which sets of Preludes you have enjoyed less than Theraud's. Can you tell which ones?

No problem:

Livia Rev/Hyperion
Vladimir Ashkenazy/Decca
Adam Harasiewicz/Philips
Lincoln Mayorga/Sheffield Lab
Garrick Ohlsson/Arabesque

FWIW, my fab four come from Bolet, Argerich, Freire and Katsaris.

[Dislike:] Garrick Ohlsson/Arabesque

Interesting; I quite like pretty much all of Ohlsson's Chopin, including his Op. 28!

Such as I have heard, I like, too.

IMO the most overrated Chopin player I've heard. No idea how he won the competition

QuoteKatsaris.

Don't think I ever heard that one but will try now. Will play the Tharaud later and post about it.

Have you (or anybody else) listened to Ohlsson's "Tristesse" Etude, Op. 10/3? In the middle section he plays some wrong notes very confidently — presumably intentionally (1:55-2:00, 2:05-2:10). Does anybody know what the deal is here? Either he put his own "spin" on things or there is some manuscript ambiguity I'm unaware of. Either way, I don't like it!

But otherwise, I quite enjoy his Chopin.  :)

almost certainly a different edition. Some pianists do this -- Demidenko for example uses a Mikuli edition (I think), and Bolet in his 3rd sonata used a different edition as well (it's discussed on YT, first mvt I think).

Of these i have only heard the Ohlsson. I don't remember how much I liked it. I only heard it once.

I need to revisit the Bolet, perhaps tonight. I have and very much enjoy the Argerich. (my extra copy is soon on it's way to Bogey) The Friere was my first and I do enjoy it. The Katsaris I haven't heard, but since I enjoy the other three in your fab four, I will check him out.

Thanks!  :)

Good evening :).

I am loving this. There's something so lush - so louche, even - about Szymanowski's music :D.
Durch alle Töne tönet
Im bunten Erdentraum
Ein leiser Ton gezogen
Für den der heimlich lauschet.

Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) - Symphonies w/ Bryden Thomson & the Royal Scottish NO - continuing my exploration tonight of the six symphonic works of this Czech composer, pretty much unknown to me; the second (of three) discs includes the Second & Sixth Symphonies, the latter called 'Fantaisies symphoniques' - quite different & contrasting orchestral works; these recordings have been applauded already in these pages, and this set is an 'inexpensive' introduction to Martinu -  :)

But I don't dislike Ohlsson's recording of the Preludes; I just find it much less to my liking than the Tharaud.

Well, I've heard it at least a dozen times.  I don't review anything that I haven't heard many times.

Although I don't think very well of Harasiewicz's recording of the Preludes, I think his Fantaisie in F minor is terrific.

Yes, my favorite recording of it. Moravec's other recordings of it are almost as good, too.
