I didn't realise that recording had made it to GROC. I've long wanted to purchase, so will now invest, particularly as it's had a make-over!

Morning!

A somewhat delicate start to the day for me here. I noticed numbers 4, 5 and 6 amongst my Amazon recommendations yesterday. I instantly bought the disc and am now playing 1, 2 and 3 for the third time in less than 24 hours.

Re. Viola in My Life - is that a volume 1 and 2, or just the first two movements? I am only aware of the 4 movement recording on ECM, which I assumed is all there was.

I will be locked up in my studio for the next week or two working on training material. (I will be doing psychological intervention training for teachers in the Sichuan earthquake region next month). I will be listening to:

Noel Lee
Donald Erb
Beethoven Symphony #9 (VPO, Kleiber the Elder)

Lots of Alkan (Gibbon, Hamelin, Smith)
Scriabin Sonatas (Hamelin and Ogdon)
Beethoven 3 (Knappersnusch, Bremen)

Lots of Kurtag
etc.
Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

That's just the first two movements. The other 3 pieces on the disc are as great as The Viola In My Life. Highly recommended. The cover I posted previously is a reissue. This, I believe is the original.

Luis de Freitas Branco, is something of a marvel to me. Every time when I put on some music of him, I seem to enjoy myself immensely, time and time again. He is a marvelous orchestrator, and every note is therefore a micro cosmos in it self. All notes together depict musical heaven for me.
The second movement of the first Symphony, "Andante" holds many gorgeous melodies, and shows how marvelous he was in knitting together melody after melody. The Scherzo Fantastique holds more as a hint to Grieg's Peer Gynt, expertly woven in in this composition, a very concentrated piece.
Suite Alentejana is absolutely stunning in every respect, again the second movement impressed me most "Intermezzo Adagio-Andantino". Excellent wood wind writing all around.
And well performed too, recorded by that sound wizard Phil Rowlands.

Harry

From this box the excellently recorded and performed Fourth Symphony.
Fast and furious, giving me lots of pleasure.

And directly after it I played the Fifth Symphony in a very refreshing performance, with lots of punch.

So I presume you're not a Broncos fan, else it would have already been used to line the bird cage.

Now in rotation:  Barber & Britten cello ctos, Ma/Zinman/Baltimore

Yup.  Been one since 2nd grade.  However, I am down to only listening to or watching baseball at this point in my life David.  Just too many other priorities and interests that have moved ahead of the NFL.  In fact, I have not watched a complete NFL game (including Super Bowls) since the Broncs won their first.

And for the record, many a sports page has lined the cage of our two Zebra Finches we keep in our bedroom.  :)

I don't think they are 'movements' of a unified composite work.  I think they're distinct pieces, but 'variations on a title', Sara.
