Eugen d'Albert

Cello Concerto in C major, opus 20.

Alban Gerhardt, Cello.
BBC Scottish SO/Carlos Kalmar.

A warm glowing work, on the very top of romanticism, and peaceful in its outlook, it charms you no end, and will not tire you out, by virtuosic gyropractics on the Cello. It has a quiet attitude, and a friendly outlook.
The playing is, as on the rest of the disc exemplary.

Good morning/day to all!

Good beginning I would say, the Severac disc is fine!

Good morning to all my friends, part of them still slumbering, part of them looking for the coffee machine, few working their way through traffic to their respective offices. ;D

quintett op.57

Harold en Italie - Colin Davis LSO

Even if he refused to perform it, I hope Paganini enjoyed this work, this is great.

Hugo Alfven

Symphony No. 5 in A minor opus 54.

Andante Religioso.

Norrkoping SO/Niklas Willen.

This is a wonderful piece of music. Never liked the Jarvi recordings on disc, being to slow and deliberate. But the present recording, on Naxos, as with all the Naxos releases, are nearer to the core of Alfven as ever there was one conductor. He captures the mystery and exuberance in one big sweep, without losing the overall view. And they multiple details come to the fore that dazzle the ears. Beauty is called for and given. this is a fantastic close of all the symphonies and one on which Naxos can be proud!
Sound is excellent, and the score lucid enough.

What's Jarvi got to do with it, dear friend??? :)

Well... ummm.... sorry, maybe it's just me, but from your post I inferred that, although you dislike Jarvi, in this recording he got it right. :)

Oke corrected that in the text!
I had the Jarvi recordings on Bis, but sold them, because I was terribly bored by his approach, plus the to lush sound that clouded the rather thick score.
So no, the fifth was no better.

What do you think of Jarvi's Sibelius cycle with Gothenburg SO? A fine set, IMHO.

Aulis Sallinen.

Sunrise Serenade opus 63.

Avanti Chamber Orchestra/Saraste.

Sallinen is quickly becoming one of the most popular composer with me. I am fascinated by his sound world.
This piece confirms that forcibly.

Absolutely stunning! It was my first Sibelius cycle, and still the best in my collection.

It is a great piece!

A marvelous disc. That a poor and hungry young man dying of consumption wrote such a beautiful and luminous music is nothing short of a miracle. Highly recommended.

If I would not have it already I would have bought it on your recommendation.
He had a ill fate indeed.
