Courtesy of pmje: Victor Legley (1915-1994), Symphony No. 8 (1994) - BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra under Avi Ostrovsky (BRT Radio recording 1994).

The French-Flemish born, Belgian (even Flemish) composer Victor Legley, a pupil of Jean Absil and himself a teacher at the Brussels Conservatory, finished his final symphony in the year of his death (well, few do so afterwards 0:)). It's a sort of neoclassical expressionism, sounding at the same time out of context (1994!) and yet masterful and well-crafted. How many fine composers there are, remaining completely unknown an unrecorded.  :o
... music is not only an 'entertainment', nor a mere luxury, but a necessity of the spiritual if not of the physical life, an opening of those magic casements through which we can catch a glimpse of that country where ultimate reality will be found.    RVW, 1948

Now playing this SACD, which arrived over a week ago from MDT.  I have really come to enjoy just about every recording by Jordi Savall I bought ...

I've listened to this way too much, and it still retains its spell.
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

I have a good number of CD titles by Tactus - mainly on works by little known Italian Baroque composers.  Just wonder why much cheaper Brilliant Classics can price the re-issues since Tactus' CD's are already reasonably priced ...

A single CD on Tactus is €17,40 while a single CD on Brilliant is €5,99 (-65%); I paid for the 3CD set with Tartini sonatas €9,99 (-81%).

I got most of my Tactus CD's probably about 3 years ago at around $9.98 each.  I bought 15 of these according to my computer ...

They were great values and I particularly appreciated those works composed by little-known Italian baroque composers performed by some regional ensembles from Italy instead of those established ones such as I Solisti Veneti or I Musici.  The level of virtuosity was actually quite high in my opinion.

Relaxing after a hard day at work with this, my introduction to both Mart Saar and Eduard Tubin.

Love seeing the CD cover of Finlandia label ...

I love the cover! It's what attracted me to the cd in the first place. Happy to say I love the contents as much as the cover!  ;D

Unfortunately, WarnerMusic has smothered the individuality and creativity of all these small labels such as ERATO, TELDEC and FINLANDIA it had taken over.

Now playing Vol. 2 of Cortot Chopin I received from MDT last week ...

Brian

How are those Spanish Classics CDs, Lethe? :)

RussellG

Some great performances on this one.  I'm still yet to delve into a complete Wagner opera though!

The new erato

I've never understood the majors obsession with taking over smaller labels just to strangle their activity and business. If it were to eliminate competition they should have learnt their lesson; there's always new ones ready to pop up, if it were to generate business, why stop them from releasing discs and maintaining their a strong identity?

Joseph Haydn.

Cassations XII:19.
Baryton Duets X:11 in D, XII:4 in G, XII:1 in A, XII:3&5 in D.
Esterhazy Ensemble.

This is really a fine disc to listen to, especially if you are battling with a flu. My luck!
Volume 18, from this big box, and still going strong.

Daverz

Mozart PC16, from the Arte Nova box of Mozart PCs.  So far the performances I've sampled from this box have been wonderful.  $20 from BRO!

Saygun, Symphony No. 3 on CPO.  What a marvelous discovery Saygun has been.  And this series has had some of the finest performances and recordings from CPO.

A disc of non-Scheherazade Rimsky on super budget Seraphim.  All classic EMI recordings from the Golden Age of Stereo.

Boulez, Piano Sonata No. 1 and Sessions, Piano Sonata No. 2, played by Alan Marks on a CRI Lp, which I don't think ever made it to CD.
